Iv searched all throughout Tacoma world of this issue and anyone that has had an issue that was similar didn’t follow through with showing what the actual problem was. So I’m hoping you guys can help!

i bought my 2008 V6 Tacoma about 3 months ago, after about a week of owning it I went out to start it and it started, idled for about a second and died. I tried to start it again and same thing happened. Then on the third try it started and idled no problems and I drove it for the rest of the day with no issues. It happens about every other day. About a week ago I started it, it idled for a second and died like usual, and then when I went to try it again, it would just crank and crank. Finally after about 5 tries, and me sitting there for 10 minutes waiting. It started and idled like it had no issues.

I read that it could be the battery? It was 7 years old so I figured I’d replace it. It didn’t solve the issue. I was thinking it could be fuel related ?

Any input would be greatly appreciated, thank you!

ide check the maf sensor, could be dirty or a wiring issue with the plug, could also be the immobilizer but I don't think it would drive at all if it was that, just idle and die right away.

I forgot to add that I did check the MAF sensor and it looked pretty clean but I cleaned it anyways. I’m really stumped here, this is my 4th 2nd gen and Iv never had an issue like this before.

Harden your bark, there are storms on the horizon.
Mine will sometimes start and die if atmospheric conditions are very different from the last time it was running. Starts right back up and no issues the second time.

Perhaps when cranking, move key to 'run' position, wait one second, then crank it over. They won't start if you begin cranking before the engine senses fuel pressure. Or...your fuel pump might be going? :notsure:

Iv driven my truck in the same area since Iv owned it, My friend told me he had an issue similar and that it was his fuel pump, but his truck wouldn’t even idle.

I'm talking about if say you drove in the morning and it was XX degrees, then a cold front comes in and suddenly drops temps by 10-15 degrees or the humidity jumps. Like the ECU has a brain fart and needs to recalibrate itself or something. I have never had to crank more than twice.

Try the slow method I described on starting. I have 'jumped the pump' before on my truck and gotten a no start. I know...sounds silly.

Ohh I see what you mean, I’ll try it next time it happens. Usually it takes at least three times trying to start it before it actually stays idling

Cleaned the throttle body this evening. It was pretty dirty. After reinstalling it and turning the truck on, it had a high idle which I’m guessing is from the computer getting used to it being clean now. We’ll see if that takes care of the issue.

Yep, you cleaned out the gunk that was restricting the idle air. The ECU will now relearn the throttle blade position to achieve the desired RPM.

RCBS - this is exactly what I do for every ignition sequence. Purchased the truck new in 2009 and for the first couple months was so excited to drive that I'd hop in and crank in one fell swoop. The ignition sequence would stall, often times failing. Perplexed, I ran it by a mechanic buddy who suggested I pause to allow the system to initialize, the sensors to register, etc. It took about a week to develop a new habit, but for the last 11+ years and 140k miles I've been employing this simple trick with great success. I move from "LOCK" to "ON" without pausing at "ACCESSORIES." Pause for a moment at "ON" until the radio kicks on, then crank it. Just a simple hack, but worked for me.

I had a similar issue my truck would turn fire up and turn off immediately and do that for about 20 minutes, only happened every couple of weeks and it ended up just being the key. My mechanic got me a new key and it hasn’t happened since.

Similar symptoms in the following thread, several component replacements but appears no resolution given.

I read about that issue, somehow the key isn’t recognized and the truck will do that. I have two keys for my truck and I thought maybe that was the issue but it’s happened with each one.

After cleaning the throttle body yesterday, the truck started and ran no issues today. But we will see what happens the next few days.
