What have you done to your Tacoma today? 1st Gen Edition

If possible weigh your truck before and after. I know there are a lot of questions about this mod's effect on weight but no definitive answer.

My son just did his second gen in my garage. Went and picked a color he liked from the paint shop. I am keen on the idea, but for me would require a complete disassemble because the difference would bother me. Looking forward to seeing how it turns out. Highly recommend thinning the mix a touch for a finer texture on the body itself and do a thicker texture on bar work and stuff. Be careful what PSI you spray at also

 

It gets a little warm, but hasn’t shut off on me yet. I only have 33’s, so I’m not too worried about over heating it. I’ve got a buddy with 35’s on his, so I think I’ll go try to air up his tires on a hot day and see how it does since I plan to go to 35’s when these tires wear out. A lot of the 2nd gen guys put them in the cubby hole in the bed, and mine is starting at whatever temp is in the cubby hole and not the heat of under the hood, so...? I had a lot of nay sayers telling me that was an awful spot to put it because it would be too loud and it would overheat. My girlfriend fell asleep to the humming of the compressor when I was airing up this weekend though. I do need to run a stainless steal braided leader hose off of it though, because the hose gets hot! I blew the hose coming right out of the compressor off after filling up tire number four last weekend from 10 psi to 35 psi (That woke my girlfriend up from her nap!). I put a second hose clamp on it for the time being, but that hose was hot and very flimsy. I’ve got sound mat and a vinyl kit on order, so when that comes in, I’ll rip the interior out and clean up/finalize the install. If it gets to the point where it’s overheating, I’ll cut holes on both sides of the storage box and put a fan to circulate the air through the storage compartment. It is on a switch in the dash!
I elected that spot, because I could turn the compressor on and off through the window without having to open the door. It’s been pretty nice so far!

 

Ordered the Throttle Position Sensor from PartsGeek.com got it next day and it is the 89452-35030 part # needed for the 2003, 2004 Tacoma. Installed it and it works great. So now there is a way to get the sensor without having to buy the entire throttle body.

I know, I can buy a 50 gal water drum for that much.

 

It's also a bit weird that they say "will not work with your 2004 Tacoma" yet it does.

Lol just joking, I'm glad to find a replacement, it's crazy Toyota didn't ever offer one.

 

Spent some time this weekend on the Taco:

- Leather steering wheel wrap ($14)

- Electric door lock (pop n lock) ($70) I think it cost more now, but i found it on sale awhile ago

- TPMS system ($40 on Amazon), not a bad system seems to work well however the sensors are a bit ugly, but to me worth it.


On order AFE throttle body spacer, new shift lever/knob, and OVRLND camper (can't wait)

all racks are Yakima. qtowers on the cab and control towers on the shell. load warrior basket with extension on the shell.

I'm actually taking the family to CO at the end of July. Driving Medano Pass again and maybe Inogene if I dont wimp out. haha!

 

Anyone by change know where I can find the ground wire for the fuel pump?

I'm assuming it runs down with that bundle of wires in the door sill next to the driver seat.

I'm trying to put in a simple kill switch to the fuel pump as a security measure.
I believe @Empty_Lord mentioned doing it this way a while back, which seems like a good safe way to do it.

I have a few electrical documents for the 3rz and ECM system, but can't seem to find anything that points to where the ground wire is or what color it is.

 

That's a good thought, as I have read various places about this adding huge amounts of weight. My contention is that the weight of the product will run to about 16 pounds plus or minus, for 2 gallons. Seems that could be about the max amount of weight added.

I've read that others recommend thinning just a bit and shooting at the higher end of the scale for pressure, in order to get it relatively smooth texture, which is what I am going to go for. I think I can shoot it so that it will basically just end at the edges of the panels, and will mask beyond/behind those edges to avoid overspray. I plan to document as best I can. Thanks for the encouragement!
