Issue with oil draining during oil change

I too just spin the cartridge off without draining it.

 

The first time i did an oil change on this truck i thought. well this is a stupid setup... wonder if i'll think the same on my next oil change.

 

Nah. The cartridge drain is meh. Our other car with a cartridge didn't have it. No big deal.

I actually prefer cartridge filters since there is less waste, just swapping the actual media.

That car was going at almost 150k when we sold it. Zero problems and the cartridge was shaped like a metal filter. None of the helpful side flutes like the Taco.

 

I think people just dont like change. I dont have a preference on either style filter, never bothered me. I have a had a vehicle or two with a filter or canister up top, that was nice, but I still had to get under it to drain the oil so it's not like it made it any faster

I did like the up top idea when I saw it on the 2nd Gen that I test drove. Our Subby has one also and I am about to do the first oil change on it. So, that will be a new and fun experience for me.

Like you said, it really doesn't matter and you gotta get under there anyway to drain plus greasing the zerks for those that have them.

 

I'm coming from a 4th Gen 4runner 4.0l V6. That was the easiest oil change setup i've ever had. 0 tools needed after i installed an EZ drain valve. didn't have to remove any skid plate or anything just set oil pan, open valve, grab a cup and unscrew the oil filter up near the battery, refill. done in about 10 minutes or less. I just thought it was really slick. then when i went to this truck i was like well damn...

 

My oil changes are never that quick. Usually, pour a beer, get the stuff out from the shelves, drawers, and crawlspace. Drain it for a good long while just to get the most out and most fresh stuff in, tinker with the rest, and pour another beer.

Given the orientation of the pan bolt, I don't think a valve is a good idea. But that is just me.


Either way, it is just an oil change. Been doing them since I could hold a wrench and can say that modern cars are a lot better thought out than malaise era GMs with filters hidden in crappy spots and drain plugs shooting oil on to the frames.

 

sounds like a solid procedure. I love wrenching on my vehicles. it's just that times become a rare thing for a father of two little ones with a working wife as well. any minute of time i get to work on the truck is rare these days. I love the ezdrain got one going in the tacoma next oil change 100% and will never look back. skid plate will protect it well as soon as its done being built by BAMF!

 

This being my first truck, and with the extra inch of 3rd Gen ground clearence, not dealing with jacks or ramps for most all work is pretty freaking nice.

 

Garage therapy is a real thing.

Those kiddos will get big soon. Get 'em in the garage with you, if you can. My daughters wanted no part if it, but the oldest now has to since she started driving. Brake job, tire rotation, and oil change coming up. It is a laugh as this Mazda 3 is the lowest car that we ever had. I have some old shallow, but tall ramps that need a few sleepers to get it up. I'm going to try it with the traction boards instead of wood this next time.

 

This man! I've had to change some filters that would make you cuss and scream at the manufacturer for putting it in such a hard spot to get to. Oil changes on these trucks is a breaze

 

Well, you did say you are changing oil every 5,000 miles.

 

I actually prefer the cartridge system. Less waste. I do drain the filter housing using the adapter. It's just less messy that way.

 

I'm gonna throw my two-cents in here. Drain the pan first. Once it's done, take the filter off. I tried using the drain adapter thing once and all it was good for was getting oil up to my elbow, so now I just pull it and pour it out. Like normal.
Not gonna like, I'm jealous of the 2nd gen 4.0 with its spin-on filter located at the top of the motor. There IS a kit that someone posted on here that relocates the filter and converts it to a spin-on.

 

Drain from the pan, then from the cartridge housing. Drain adapter needs to be put in deep enough to get any significant amount out. Still messy as hell. I still prefer the old metal filter oil filters myself. Look into getting you the metal oil filter housing and metal housing removal bit/socket.

Right on! Thats how i work on my vehicles as well

Once i had a bit too many and cross threaded the last spark plug on my ranger... Thank god i have a buddy who has a machine shop, he came and installed the heli coil on the spot.

Now i stick to a few beers max.

 

You are probably right. Personally i do my oil changes every 5-6 k miles as well. Makes me sleep better at night.

I do run my truck pretty hard at times so thats one of the reasons as well.

 

On moto filter drain, are you threading it in, then threading up the drain actuator? Unless it is pressed open fully, it would act like you are describing.
