That's actually not bad for a custom housing that's finished. Yea you have to stuff that with goodies, but you would have to do that anyway with a junkyard housing. If we weren't on great depression part 2s door step, that would be a nice axle to buy and flip. Add the good parts and then do the 90% toyota part markup on it.

Question for all you folks that have a greater depth of understanding on the subject of SAS for a 2nd gen. Everyone seems to use a ifs steering box with the pitman arm facing the rear. It looks like a struggle to push the box as far forward to gain clearance without getting into the core support.

Recently while stalking the internet I ran into a sweet SAS 2nd gen by Candor Offroad (maybe I'm late to the party on finding this rig/shop). They used a fj60 box instead since the pitman arm is facing forward. Is there a reason more people dont do this?

I had poked around at this for a minute and it does work. Assuming links, you just have to be conscious of your panhard and coilover mount/packaging instead of he body mount packaging with a forward swing box. Take a look at Saginaw boxes for forward swing too

I have a forward swing box out of a ford truck on mine and like anything it has its pros and cons. Pros are like you identified you can push it further forward without hacking apart the core support. The negative is the box is almost right in the way of evreything, shock hoops bump stops, tie rod and drag link etc.

Do you think there is a diffirence in parts availability between the IFS and the fj60 box?

Never looked into it but landcruiser parts tend to be more expensive and a bit harder to find.

Looking to install a manual proportioning valve with some rear GM disks on my 98 that'll use 3/16 hard line on the axle - Wilwood offers a few different options - any good methods for installing one w/ part number and pics? I am in the process of deciding whether I want to put it under the hood or out back where the stock brake line has to adapt to 3/16 probably on the gas tank x member due to the soft line having to go down to the center of the axle to miss hitting shocks etc.

For me it was hard to find a reasonably priced 60 box. Got the ifs box for $30 and a rebuild kit from rock auto for cheap. Haven’t had an issue. Mine is as far forward as I could get it and I did have some issues with drag link clearing the motor, but I was keeping it as low as possible on leafs. Flipped pitman arm made the drag link higher too.

Hows that tie rod end do at max drop? Would think it would run out of angle before the axle droooped all the way down but never thought of doing it that way

I tried TRE’s and they bound up. I ended up using GM drag link ends. They take more angle. It surprised me how much of an angle they will take. They don’t bind with my 14in shocks maxed out.
Check this picture out. They are made different than a TRE. Drag link left. TRE bottom right.

    *one month later*

I think most people don't do this because the price of the front facing arms is a bit more expensive and harder to come by. There's a ton of support for rear Sag and "Toyoda" IFS boxes. If you plan for it accordingly, it's not an issue. If I had it to do again, I would have went full-hydro.

If you're hell bent on getting one:

Scout II (Saginaw) - outside frame
94ish era of Pathfinders - outside
Astrovans (not sure on year) - inside
    93-97 Ranger - inside?
    80s F-150 - outside
Full size ford and chevy vans - outside... I think

Benchworks Steering will swap internals if you want to convert to a forward swing.

Good advice, to add to this Parts Mike will make any pitman arm you want. Just call them with the type of box and what kind of rod ends you are using. They made my flat forward swing ford arm with fj80 TREs for me. They lost money on me because they broke 2 fj80 reamers building it. Great customer service and have been around for almost forever http://partsmike.com/

Whelp, that saved me a lot of looking around. This is in "shit I want to do in the near future." Move axle back an inch and go a little longer on the pitman to use *all 8 inches of stroke*

    Giggity.

Not a tacoma but here is my shitbox i purchased a few months ago. Quite a step up from a toyota on 33's and should be a good platform to build up even more with in the future.

Quick list of parts- 1994 Runner w/ mini truck axle, 3.4 swap with TRD supercharger, Dual cases with 4.7's, 5.29's on 38.5" creepy crawlers, locked F/R, Full Hydro.

Only catch is the motor runs like shit when its warmed up. Feels like terrible mis-fire under heavy throttle but runs fine under light loads or when cold. My guess is i am having lean-out issues with the supercharger so i purchased a Snow Performance Meth injection kit. Stay tuned for results. Should be installed later this week.

Feel to roast my rig :bananadead:
