What have you done to your Tacoma today? 1st Gen Edition

I've spent the better part of three days getting my passenger side doors swapped out to the ones from the salvage vehicle in Florida. I first thought, heck, it's only four bolts and three electrical connections. That is until I realized that both of the new doors had issues with the latches and outside handles. My original ones were fine, so I stripped down all four doors, which takes you down to basically the shell of the door. While I was in there, I did add some of the Frost King to absorb some of the sound and take some of the tininess out of them when you close them. The frost king does a good job, and was still in perfect shape on the original doors, from about 3 years ago.

 

I have mine aimed to give more light to the front and sides of my truck. Basically they light up from fence to fence.

 

hmm, that's a good perspective. a buddy of mine used to have a roof mounted light bar on his Ranger and as i remember, that thing was blinding if he turned it on when we actually needed it. it was mounted too far forward so all it did was light the hood up. maybe i was just looking for someone to talk me into the s1s but i am now thinking i'll go with a set of spotlight s1s and try out a set of widebeam lenses. my ditch lights will get used for pretty much the same thing as you, personally i don't do enough hardcore night wheeling to warrarn't something that is effectively a high mountned rock light, and my lack of a true habitat camper or RTT means that i really don't spend much time around the truck until i go to bed. anything i do at night is just rolling up to a campsite a bit late or driving around back/fs roads. thx for your input!

 

a driving pattern is a good sort of blend between flood and spot. I wouldn't want lasers either on them, but I still want something with good distance to spot deer at 70mph.

 

I love my ditch lights, have hundreds of hours driving around all night, I guess there straight spotters though

 

yeah, that's what i think that Baja designs might've been trying to accomplish with the s2 combo. it's got the flood and spot to give it a blend. i still think that the s1s will give me what i need. if you look in this video they've got a brief demonstration of what the spots look like on a truck, it's in the first person view of the UTV.

 

Planning on changing the stock horns:
There is only one connection to the stock horns, I am assuming that is the positive and its grounded to the core support - can anyone confirm this?

The Hellas have two prongs - assuming positive and negative and comes with a relay.

Going this route:

 

Replaced the passenger side CV axle with one I had recently rebooted. The inner boot on the old one was making a mess. Plus, the axle seal on that side had started to seep oil after the last adventure.



There was a lot of debris around the seal. I've seen this movie before. splashing thru muddy puddles can cause this. I cleaned up the seal, got rid of all the grit and mud.


The seal itself seemed to still be in good condition after cleaning so I slapped in the replacement axle. Time will tell whether that was the right decision.

You could run a spot and flood s1 on each side and angle them different. Could even wire them to separate switches also and get the best of both worlds when needed. But the ol’ cost factor comes into play agin with that idea haha

yeah, cost is the name of the game here, haha. i've got about $220 to spend on the pair of lights. plus i'm trying to keep a lower profile look.

 

Glad you chose that CV as the one to use. Looking good there.

 

I have that setup on my truck (CBI ditch light brackets with S2's). I haven't had to use them so not much feedback on performance. I think they look cool and am hoping they work well when I do need them.

You may not be able to tell from the first pic, but the one I pulled, which is the other OEM one, looks the same as the one you didn't care for. Not sure what it all means, but those two are the ones that came with the truck.

Thanks! It's a Shrockworks bumper. Funny thing is, I initally wanted an Elite bumper but couldn't afford it at the time. Demello was my other choice but they weren't mass producing 1st gen bumpers. So I went with Shrockworks and am glad I did. They offer the center hoop as an option but I asked them to add the side "support" bars. Turned out exactly how I wanted it to.
