Front recovery point?

I'm looking to install a front recovery point, probably a hook
because better mpg and cheaper than other parts like a metal bumper ($1000)

so far the options I'm seeing are:
-SOS concepts, $63
-BPfabricating, $95
-TRD hook, probably $200+. Because new hook and new silver aluminum TRD skidplate, neither of which I can find on the used market

because of that, SOS looks best. Same function and cheapest.
Are there any other companies I missed?
Pulled these results off the first 2 pages of Google results.

 

looks like it uses a single bolt, 2 at most. What's most important to you?

Not sure.
Looks like SOS might use 2 bolts, and BPF might use 3.
would think 3 bolts is better, but factory TRD upgrade hook uses 2.



ARB hook is probably the strongest but most won't pay $250+ on a hook



for a light stuck situation getting or giving a pull, less might work fine

 

Our tow hooks have been given hell being used by some. If you have a TRD OR hook and are replacing it with ours you'll have to source some hardware, if not then the factory hardware will work.

On a side note wondering what all the orders and interest is in for the recovery point. It seems like an extremely popular item right now.

 

There was a good sale on the BP hook last Xmas season if you’re pinching pennies and can wait

 

I bolted a Smittybilt 7505 chrome hook on the passenger side, in place of the OEM transport bracket ($18 now; $11 when I bought it on Amazon in 2012). I originally installed a

$13 Curt 22430 Black Steel Tow Hook, 10000 lbs Capacity

Curt 22430 hook, but the paint chipped off and replaced it with the Smitty. It does sit at an angle, but its shouldn't affect it intended purpose.

 

Why does it matter what it looks like? This last fellow has the right idea. Literally any $15-20 hook that uses that mounting point will work. If you wanna buy a $100-200 hook because it looks good, go for it, but it won't be one iota better than the cheap option.

 

So much money for nothing... Just go to a truck hardware shop.

 

90% of the stuff people go gaga for on this site fits that description

They sell red paint at the hardware store too. Buy you a $20 hook and paint it bright red. Voila, $175 hook.

 

When u buy the BPF skid you get the upgraded recovery pt free during some sales

 

Interesting skid plate. Looks like it could be TRD aluminum one painted black. They seem hard to find used.

Yes I've seen those hooks cheap.
I can't seem to find any suggesting fitment for the 2nd gen Taco so maybe they're universal.
How'd you bolt it on? Did the holes line up and you just re-used factory hardware from the tie-down?

 

Yep. I used an identical hook off my dad's 1997 Toyota pickup on my truck. Bolt holes have been standard for years on tow hooks it seems

 

I like bpf over sos because 3 vs 2 mounting points, and 1/2” vs 3/8” steel.

 

I'll double-check this weekend, but yes, I believe the bolts lined up and I used the OEM bolts. Yes, on the TRD alum skid plate painted black - needs a new coat.

Hey OP, I got a stock TRD OR hook I just took off. Hit me up if you're interested and maybe we can work something out.

 

I bought one since ive got an arb.... and no recovery points but a winch.....

 

How do you intend to use it? A tow hook is different than a recovery point, and a snatch point is different than a pull point. The ARB system ties back into heavy framework and is rated at roughly twice the other recovery point options. The other recovery points mount to secondary frame and are rated/estimated, approximately at 9500#. If you plan to do a lot of snatch recoveries you should go ARB, if you are looking for a winching point SOS or BPF will do the trick. If you occasionally need to tow or pull something a hook might suit you fine.

 

On my sport I took off the recovery plate & added the off-road tow hook. Better than nothing till I get the bpf recovery. I recommend getting something if u got nothing. If you have a sport the bolts are longer if u add a tow hook

 

Would be open to ARB one day.
Maybe for now if I buy a cheaper used hook to run until saving up for an ARB.

Was thinking maybe it could be used to be pulled out, or pull others out. Such as during winter. But I try to drive carefully and not get stuck.
You have a point. If it's a hard pull, ARB is probably stronger. Like how Australians get stuck in sand on the beach when the tide comes in and then snatch the truck out real fast with another one (Hilux diesel or landcruiser?)

was hoping lesser hooks can handle softer recoveries without ripping the crossmember off.
Otherwise why did Toyota even put the TRD OR hook there?

as opposed to the stock tie-down ring TRD sports come with that apparently is only to rope a truck down onto a semi truck for shipping delivery transport when new

yep, pretty much that idea.
Sounds like you're saying the OR hook is better bought with longer bolts that come with it
because it's the stock tie down ring looks thinner so I imagine the bolts for it are shorter
