That doesn’t make much sense in the context of the OR’s locker, because the locker can be engaged/disengaged with a button. You get the best of both worlds. If we were talking about a Detroit locker, it might mage some sense because that engages automatically whether or not you want it too.

If you like limited slip diffs, you will likely also like ATRAC / MT select. It can be engaged all the time, doesn’t interfere with steering, and still keeps all 4 wheels turning in most situations.

Not even my 2020 OR has push button start, so I assume nether does the SR5.

Better to have it and not need it than to need it and not have it. You never know when you may go off road by choice or lack thereof. And you never know when you might start feeling the itch to. Me personally, I used all of it in the first week and got my ass stuck. Realized the limits of a stock Off Road.

The AT TRD / Limited / Pro trims have push button start. No MT trucks do or lower trims.

Ya, but you don’t need any of it to drive off-road; not even 4wd. It just gets you even more stuck. ;)

That said, not having those goodies limits the trails you can hit.

The old saying is"The difference between 2 and 4 wheel drive is you get 50 feet further in 4 wheel drive before you're stuck"! LOL

The auto lsd is 2wd only, however I have found it useful when exiting a parking spot on mostly dry pavement with occasional ice and snow. No need to engage and then disengage 4wd.

Additionally, there was a time that I got my 4wd SR5 stuck in 4wd and was not able to get unstuck until I put it in 2wd and engaged the auto lsd. The front axle was buried in snow and only 1 of the rear wheels had traction.

To be honest I was getting through some nasty shit and was quite impressed. Then I got over confident. But I would have never even got near as much covered if I didn't have the goodies. It was a straight up mud trail. Spots deep as hell.

Oh I agree, however I have and have had a few OR's, Sports, SR5s, I can count on my hand the amount of times I used my rear locker / CC / MTS. Depending on the price difference, it may be worth it to just stick to an SR5 if you will likely never use any of the above, no sense paying for something you MAY use, and resale is similar across all trims, ORs / TRDs just appear higher because they are priced higher initially. Lots of factors into a purchase, but from what OP asked which is a locker really a need, for most here I'm willing to bet that answer is no. Though the TW narrative will tell everyone that they need an OR, lift, wheels and tires...

Did you see the video with the guy in the SR5 jacking up the truck demonstrating the LS? Still worked in 4LO.

The problem with that video is that the author was misnames TRAC as Auto LSD. Auto LSD is significantly more aggressive and only works when it is enabled and speed is below a limit (3mph?).

    https://www.tacomaworld.com/threads/3rd-gen-traction-control-modes-explained.530695/

I did some experiments with Auto LSD vs TRAC and reported the results in another thread (can’t find it anymore). The primary result was that Auto LSD might get you unstuck but TRAC will not.

    EDIT: I found my post.

Did the SR5 have a lot of dealer add-ons or something? $1,500 seems much closer between those two trims than I remember. The SR5 is a good truck. My dad has had two of them and I've really liked them. The reason I keep going with the TRD models is because of other options that I want that aren't available on the SR5.

That close of a price, the OR does have some extras, though they may not matter to OP.
    - Rear locker (Never needed when I had my 17 OR)
    - Crawl control (Never needed it)
    - Brake booster
    - Mirror turn signals (so you can swap them for MESO turn signals)
    - Smart Key and push button start
    - LED DRL
    - Electrical outlet in the bed (I don't think this is on the SR5, but I can't 100% remember)

If you don't care anything about the extras on the OR, then you could get the SR5 and have some extra money for mods. Drive both to see which one drives and handles the best to you.

Is the tow package standard on SR5?

If the only difference is SR5 vs Offroad for $1500, Offroad all day.

I'm thinking there are more differences in the packages or mileage or something. The SR5 in 4X4 trim will probably do most anything most people will want, but $1500 for the locker and suspension would be worth it.

Yes but mainly for utility, not sport. We have a few miles of logging roads on our place in western NC. Looks like you may be familiar with what that entails. Definitely possible to be very stuck.

yes, SR5 has some soccer mom upgrades I’m not interested in but would be fine with. I opted for the off-road in quicksand. Arrives in ~2 weeks.

For $1500 I'd say go the OR, you'll get other content plus the locker, etc. But if you can squeeze more off the SR5 price wise, than go that route. I'd ask the dealer if he can move on the Sr5 anymore since the price difference is so negligible.
