Previous owner has not done maintenance at 30k and it's almost ready for the 50k maintenance schedule. Hard to smoothly shift from 2nd to 3rd occasionally compared to other gears. Wondering if you guys would take it in to be looked at or should I just do the maintenance my self. Transmission fluid and coolant are the ones I was unsure about doing on my own. Appreciate the advice.

I'm not sure what you mean it's hard to smoothly shift from 2nd to 3rd compared to other gears? Stiff, stuck, grinding, your 1st manual transmission experience etc. You could have a reputable "trusted" mechanic look at it. Changing out the transmission fluid on a manual is as simple as a drain and fill. I did my purchased new 2012 myself @ 80,000 miles when vehicle was 6 1/2 years old. Still no shifting issues.

Stiff and seems to need a little throttle to shift into 3rd. Maybe it's somewhat normal since I have only had manual cars previously and have read Tacoma trucks need to be shifted slowly compared to a car transmission. You make the transmission fluid change sound easy. I will do it and report back. Tacomaholic has a video I think on the specifics. Thanks man!

Yes, your manual Tacoma transmission is not like shifting gears in a sports car per say. Lol. And another yes that changing out the manual transmission fluid is very easy (while your there I'd drain and fill the transfer case also). I'd recommend new fill/drain plug gaskets then torque all plugs to I believe was 27ft lbs. Check your owners manual for correct gear oil weight. Mine is 75W-90 GL-4 and I used Redline Products. A lot more expensive than Mobil 1 that most users purchase but a good piece of mind. Good luck!

Thanks man. Now you got me looking up how to change transfer case oil.

Patrick, in all honesty you should be good on all your fluids under the truck i.e. transmission, transfer case, front/rear differentials due to you only have 47,000 miles on the vehicle. If it was used for towing or you drive in dusty conditions then I'd consider changing them. If you choose to change them, all are nothing more than a simple drain & fill. Just keep that in mind for a huge cost savings vs dealership by doing the work yourself.

Coolant? I'd test it first before even considering changing. The old rule of thumb is 5yr or 50,000 miles. Toyota makes a great coolant. Your vehicle is almost 6 year old also. I went a little over 7yrs/75,000 miles and I live where winters are not friendly and I had no issues. If it were "me" just check all your fluids and top them off if needed (plus engine air filter & cabin filter). Change your engine oil as recommended by Toyota or sooner if you wish. But nothing wrong with wanting the best for your new Tacoma. They are a great reliable vehicle. And welcome to the forums also!

A little of this and a little of that.
Welcome to TW Patrick. Congrats on getting a low mileage Tacoma!
Like others have said, these manual transmissions in our trucks aren’t silky smooth. I’ve had Honda Civics that shifted like butter compared to these trucks.

The transmission and differential fluids are easy to change.

The spark plugs are recommended to be replaced at 30K. https://www.tacomaworld.com/threads/how-to-spark-plug-change-1-gr-fe.30479/page-108

Good luck and enjoy your truck.

All of those fluids should be good for at least 100,000 miles. Drive it and save your money for when they do need to be changed.

Welcome Patrick and congrats on the truck.
Redline MT90 smoothed out my 5 speed box a good bit, but it still shifts like a truck :)

If you decide to drain and refill: Take the fill plug (upper) out first, then do the drain plug (lower) and oil. Lots of folks have experienced the fill plug being stuck/rounded off and find it will not come loose, and if you drain it first you will be stuck with an empty trans that's very hard to fill from the bottom only.

Also, use a good 6 point socket w/ pull handle, no flat wrenches or crescents unless you have to.
The plugs are half height and act like they are made of cheese.. they round off very easy.
The newer sockets that grip on the flats instead of the points of a hex work great.

If it were mine I would do the fluid changes now especially the manual transmission. Put the MT-90 in it like some have recommended.

Is getting a O'Reily manual worth it to ensure I don't screw up these easy maintenance fluid changes you speak of. I'm a novice as you can tell.

Just read the manual again. Nowhere do I see type of transmission fluid? I did see it said non synthetic engine oil which I know the previous owner used synthetic. Confusing.

Do I by two quarts of the redline transfer case fluid? Says I need 1.1 quarts?
