I ran the numbers comparing the 6speed MT the way Toyota released it with the 4.30 pinion vs the 6speed Auto regeared to a 5.29, and the numbers for the final drive and rpm's at any given speeds almost match exactly. Thoughts on why the 5.29 wouldn't be the perfect fix over 4.88's? These comparisons were done using Toyota factory tire size as well.

I just did 5.29 on my 2020 OR and I am loving the difference. The mileage is better as well. Highway and in the city I really notice the difference.

just coming up to my 500mile oil replacement.

What size tire are you running, and how is the highway driving?

The highway right now is anchorage to Palmer Alaska. So 65ish. On 275/70/18 BF Ko2 just over 32”. Best change I have made on the truck by far. The mileage was terrible from YYC to ANC stock. Noticed even the Toyota gauge was showing better mileage then I ever had when I left the shop.

So looking to do a gear change. I’m pretty heavy with bumpers, winch, skids, and sliders on 285/75/16’s. So I’m going to be going with 5.29 gears. Has anyone installed revolution gears? They are cheaper and there is 2 kit options. Wondering if I would need the full kit or if the mini kit would be all I need? Only 45,000kms (Km’s not miles) on the truck. Will be pulling the diffs myself then bringing them to a shop for them to install.1605343F-1940-4DFA-8B91-69C5EB2706A7.jpg

Put Nitro 5.29's on my 16 DCLB with front bumper and Decked system (more weight additions to come) and love it. Getting 17-18 mpg right now average and drives like a dream. Running on 33's

The rpms are lower than in my taco with 4.30 rear end, nice. Im doing around 2k at 60 mph, stock tire size.

I drove my truck from YYC to ANC about a month after I bought it (2100 miles). Flat roads, mountains, winter, cold and warm. I got it all on that trip. From 3500’ to sea level. I was worried about fuel most of the drive as I knew I will be doing the drive again. I have been monitoring this truck right from day one on the mileage numbers. After looking into the gearing of the truck, I decided on the 5.29 would be the way to go (for me). I am getting much better fuel mileage now than I did for the first 5 months in the truck city and highway. The only other upgrade to the truck was the full no cut bumper from C4 through insurance (dam bird). The 32” was already on the truck from Toyota. I would recommend a gearing upgrade to anyone. The truck shifts better, it does not hunt for gears all the time. It seem to use 6th gear more then I did before. Probably why the increasing my mpg. It is a new truck all over again. I have put about 1000miles on it since the upgrade.

That is nice man! Glad your truck performs better now. My 4.30 gears came stock with my taco (all MTs get 4.30) I actually love how it drives, the only thing i wish 6th gear would be taller for better fuel economy on highways, as i take the hwy quite a bit on the weekend trips. Other than that its a blast to drive, i get advertised fuel economy, it has great power and its a joy to drive. I always use 6th on highways, even on slight hills, its got plenty of power. All except for 1 vehicle, which i hated btw, were manuals so i never had to worry about being in the wrong gear.

If i was into extreme wheeling, then i could see 5.29s benefiting me. There were couple times where i wished 1st was a bit lower in 4LO, but thats just asking for perfection. Its my only vehicle (besides the work van) so I need it to perform great on and off pavement.

Not sure why ATs didnt come with 4.30 or 4.88s at stock. I mean i get it, its all about fuel economy but in real world diving, 3.90 doesnt really work for a lot of folks here. I drove my buddies 19 OR AT, and it drove great. I was actually expecting it to drive like shit, from reading all the threads on TW, but i was pleasantly surprised, haha! Mind you it was like a 10 min drive, so i didnt get to experience it fully.

mine is an OF AT so it came with 3.95 to ensure taco made emission requirement in Cali I am sure. I am sure I might have liked 4.88. I am not a wheeler either.

I just ordered the 5.29 R&P w/kit from Nitro. It's going in my 2019 2WD. I'm running some heavy 20" Fuel wheels with 285/55/20 (32") tires. I can't wait to see the difference in the way it will drive. All these success stories got me hyped up. :bikewheelie:
