COMPLETED 5th Gen 4Runner BBK upgrade for 2nd Gen Tacomas

The front brakes always do the majority of braking work regardless of the setup. I wouldn’t have any concerns about the brakes being “unbalanced”

 

Yes, I know taht they typically do a majority of the work in a front engine car but they are balanced with the rears for vehicle weight and balance, suspension design, etc. This will surely change the bias to some degree and I thought someone may have already looked into how much and what performance changes to expect.

 

I may have posted the differences earlier in the thread but either way the change is likely not large enough to cause major bias changes.

Even in cases where Toyota/TRD sells a big brake kit it’s usually a larger change.

Are people still experiencing the soft pedal issue if they order what MACH375 suggested ?
or was this a speed bleeder / air issue in previous posts or Master cylinder ?

 

I have an OffRoad and cant swap my master. Some softness but overal it was solid. I recently found out my truck is 7k lbs and likely the cause of any degraded braking performance. Truck is HEAVY! I now have the Wilwoods which I think was a great upgrade. I have a set of DBA 4000 rotors going on next. Also seeing if there are any other pads I can use with the calipers. The 4runner kit with a good set of rotors and some solid truck use pads will be key. Also if you are looking for low speed or high speed. Many race pads may not give you the performance you want compared to low speed stopping. Also if your truck is heavy there is another factor most people do not factor in. GVWR of the Tacoma is 5500 and I am at 7k so thats playing alot into my performance engine and braking wise.

 

found eBay seller asking $30/caliper for these, claiming they're the bigger 5th gen 4runner

What's going on here?
1. seller claims it's new. How? Did they cast it at home from soda cans?
2. why does it not say 14WA? I thought 5th gen T4R calipers say "14WA"?

likely knock off calipers. The OEM ones do say 14WA. If you want low budget you can get remans from some of the local auto parts stores for 60-70 each.

 

Post 2016, 14WA all became 14WB cast. I have 14WB up front and 14BD in the rear. The only difference in between A and B are the mounting hole sizes went from m12 to m14. You still get the 3mm larger pistons though.

 

How did you factor for the bigger mounting holes? just eye it? also I thought it was 1mm bigger? If the newer ones are 3mm that could be another difference

 

yeah, 45 to 48mm pistons on WA and WB. I sleeved the bolts with a 2mm aluminum tube. Install thread linked.

Hard to know exactly, but if you look closely you can see that the LH and RH are both the same picture that has just been flipped and the photoshopped. It even looks blurry in the area where the casting mark would be. Could be junk castings from China, could be "rebuilt" OE stuff. Hard to know exactly.

As for the casting mark, what was said is correct. 2010-2015 (up to May, 2015) 4Runner and GX460 used 14WA calipers with M12 bolts, 2015-2021 (from May, 2015) use 14WB calipers with M14 bolts. Other than the mounting bolts, the calipers are idential, both have 48.1mm pistons. The Tacoma has 45.4mm pistons.

What are the OE caliper part numbers - it’s basically the same price for them as remanned, but on a parts site a 2011 4Runner had 14wb.

Nevermind I just saw that they updated it from the factory. I wonder if there’s a sleeve that Toyota sells.

 

not sure pretty easy to get the 14WA bonkers for the sleeve. I actually need to clean up mine and sell them. I think I’ve seen them for $60- $70 each maybe a bit more.

 

Eh? Lol. Yeah I ordered some spacer material off of the other guy’s thread link. Best I can do locally is drill out some near-sized SAE tube just until the metric tube comes in. OEM were only $156 each. I have a bad impression of remanned stuff for the most part on important parts (not an OEM Nazi by any means though) from being a regular watcher of South Main Auto on YouTube. That said I decided on a remanned first gen Taco 01-04 booster since it’s necessary for the Sequoia mc swap on 1st gens as I could buy about 5 of them for the price of OEM.

 

hell I would’ve just cut you some and mailed it out. Nothing crazy on the sheath. I got all four calipers, rotors, loaded with pads at 5k miles off a 19 gx460 for $400 at a local junkyard.

 

I appreciate it! I found 300mm (1 footish) 12mm ID x 14mm OD to be delivered here by Thursday for $12. I’m curious what the Toyota techs would do if they replace the calipers on a 2010 4Runner as not many of them are set up with a machine shop.

Finding Toyota parts at a junk yard in Los Angeles / Southern California is as likely as finding buried treasure at the beach unfortunately. I got OEM GX470 rotors (for my first gen taco) for $120 total and 14WB Calipers for $312 total. I’ll be into this about $8-900 by the time I get a remanned 01-04 Taco brake booster (96-00 use a dual diaphragm that doesn’t work with a Sequoia MC) and an adapter kit with a Sequoia MC which I got from SOS that is made for an 00-06 Tundra, but should bolt up to the 01-04 booster. Phew lol.
