I’m happy to hear it does make at least some difference. I’ve always thought this truck was a lot louder then you would expect them to be especially like your saying on the freeway.

Deadening the roof is useful if you have a roof rack. It was totally worth it for me

    I have a list....
I noticed the hyway noise right away after buying it. Think there might be some Dynamat or equivalent installed in the future. I already have my 33s to put on, after that its shocks, coils, bumper and winch time. Is it bad that I bought the winch and bumper first? ‍ I also noticed the factory speakers are dead. Time for some plug n play upgrades in that area too.

This color and config is what i'm on the search for. Speedway Blue is a pain in the ass to find here.

    Sound Deadening update

After driving 4 1/2 hours on highways this weekend with my roof, suicide doors, floor and back wall excessively sound deadened, I learned some things...

    1) the truck is just less than 3dB quieter (which is literally the definition of noticeably quieter in real world situations. So yes it’s quieter, but not as much as I’d hoped. I suspect once I do the two doors it will help more.

    2) The dominant source of noise in my truck is Wind noise. I have an access cab and camper shell roof rack. Both are Front Runner. Which are super useful, sturdy AF, but not particularly aerodynamic. Now that the road noise is tamed a little the wind noise coming in the back window is dominant. I suspect the turbulence from the roof racks are shoving air down.

    3) Also my cowl induction mod is quite noisy as well. It puts the intake right up in the cowl against the windshield. Every time she accelerates, it’s a bit more throaty than the stock intake. Since I have 295s on stock gears, she hunts a bit more to keep me at highways speeds, especially on hills. When I’m accelerating, the dBs are the same as if I hadn’t sound deadened at all.

So there it is. I will still sound deaden the two front doors, but because I have roof racks and the cowl induction mod, I will never be as quiet as even a stock truck, or as quiet as I had hoped.

:taco:Thanks for doing the real world research on this an being the Rhesus Monkey...er...Test Pilot for all of us. I wonder if a spray foam deadener or butyl rubber sheets might gain you more overall sound deadening?

I don’t know about spray foam? I did use dynamat extreme (which is butyl rubber) and closed cell foam on the roof, and those plus mass loaded vinyl on the rest. Because my noise is all roof rack wind noise, I probably would have been fine with just the dynamat. Turns out for me the road noise is less than the roof rack wind noise.

but the roof racks are totally worth it! I’ll just have a loud truck.

Could you have used some of that mat to line the cowl? Was there enough room to do that?

Deekyn: When I took out the jump seats to put in a utility panel in mine, I drove around with a decibel meter and the thing that made the most difference was adding some foam plugs to the cab vents. I got the idea from here:

    https://www.tacomaworld.com/threads...-dcsb-trd-or-lots-of-pics-links.533421/page-5

I finally got around to getting that foam from Lowes and made the cab vent baffles.

I used the large a/c seal vs the small that @Impoy47 used and I did this so that I could use one foam block for each “double vent”. There are 4 “doubles” on each side of the cab.

I cut the foam in 1” thick pieces, cut about a 1/2” off the height, then cut a bevel so that the rubber flaps can still open, and finally cut a small notch to get around the divider in each “double”. The notch goes down and the bevel goes towards the bed.

I cut 8 of these and they fit in here nice and snug, no adhesive needed, and work really well so far! I’m going to try to do a controlled test with a db meter on my phone.

1” thick block on right, finished product on left.

This ⬇️. I have only used it once. But love it so far.

Yep. Like that you used the same brackets/link style I used in my build thread. Bonus points to you sir.
