2012-2015 Tacoma DRL with Integrated Push Switch Harness

I decided to post this as there were no definitive results of anyone doing this on a 2012 with Tow Package. I have gotten enough information from the 2005-2011 thread/model years to feel confident it could be done with the correct parts for the 2012-2015 model years. I have also used an OEM style push switch and integrated that into the DRL circuit. What you are doing is removing the non DRL Wire Relay and Turn Signal Flasher, and installing the DRL Custom Wire Relay and Turn Signal Flasher so your blinker lights come on as daytime time running lights. I have given detailed instructions in the pictures to make it easier. The Custom Wire Relay will also work for the 2005-2011 model years provided they use the wire relay for their model year, as the DRL wire you're splicing into is also green with a red tracer.

**Before disconnecting any wires on the fuse box make sure to disconnect the battery so the alarm doesn't go off**

The model years 2012-2015 have a different wire relay and turn signal flasher that you will have to order than the 2005-2011 model years in order to make this work. This site had the cheapest prices. 10% off shipping code here: 10SHIP

I ordered an Air On Board DRL switch to give it a stock look, and I liked how all switch wires were different colors. It made it easier for color coding purposes as I intended to post the results. This switch is for the left side of the steering wheel, and wire relay harness modification is measured for all buttons on left side only. Buttons on center (below radio) would be longer runs of DRL wire extension.

I used Lead solder this thin so it would melt faster in conjunction with the extra flux so the solder would feed right through the wires quickly, I didn't want to cook the wires.

I decided to put the pictures is this order because it would be easier to make the custom harness before you take your dash apart because I have measured the length of wire needed to put your OEM switch on the left side of the steering wheel. The ground wire I left at 2 feet and was routed behind the fuse box to get an accurate measurement and connected in Picture 22. I had intended to post the exact ground wire measurement but figured it was easy enough to do when wrapping up and in case anyone had a different ground location in mind.


Picture 19, when removing two wire harness clips at green arrows they pull right off. When installing new custom harness clips at these locations you will have to firmly push them into place until you feel them seat properly. Like parking it the same spot in a driveway and there is an indent, you feel when your there. I wanted to make sure to mention this cause you wouldn't want to lose your blinkers driving down the road.

Great Thread!!! Question if I wanted to get rid of the DRL all together could I just cut that first wire and tape it off? Would I loose my hazards/blinker capabilities?

 

De-pin it. Then tape it.
It is a ground to activate the DRL's only.

 

The only way I would cut the DRL wire is to solder extensions to a toggle switch, I would have to agree with @caribe makaira and de-pin it(tape off) if you don't want DRL's. That way if you sell or change your mind you can return it to OEM. Here are some pics of how to de-pin, be careful pulling the wire from the back it's very thin gauge.

Clean Yota, thanks, you are the first to identify the 2012-2015 DRL mod relay and flasher part numbers. I want to add the DRL, and the tow hitch harness (part #PT725-35120) at the same time, and there seems to be a correlation between the two. My 2012 base 4x4 has neither, but I was able to add both to my (long since sold) '06. As you know, much changed in the wiring network from 2012 forward. So it seems I could get the DRL with part numbers 82241-04050 and 81980-04040 using 007's instructions as a guide. My question is, could I use part numbers 82241-04060 and 81980-04050 (those designated for Tacoma's with tow package) instead, and gain the ability to add the tow harness? The dealers out here can't offer much help. Thanks for any further input you can provide.

 

If you wanted to add the DRL and Tow Hitch Harness at the same time, then yes you would have to use part#'s 82241-04060 and 81980-04050 for everything to work properly. As far as the process of adding the Tow Package, I don't have that info as my 2012 was already equipped when I purchased it. I will say that dealers are not really willing to help out with confirming anything (including part#'s), unless of course they are doing the work. I guess that's why TacomaWorld exists!

 

Edit: the 4 pin is part of the harness going to the rear bumper...but there might another in the vehicle that mates to it. One to the the bumper harness and another 4 pin that mates with the Relay harness...
You'll only have a 4 wire to the tow, not the 7 pin.

 

First to CY, I'm thinking (hoping) that the 'tow package' is the hitch itself (I've already installed), and perhaps transmission and supplemental oil coolers. And as CM says, the 7 pin connector. And I believe (again hope) that the 4 pin connector that the hitch wire connects to under the dash is part of the DRL wiring. It appears to be from CY's pictures. The logic is there too as the install instructions for the PT725-35120 harness specify for "vehicles with DRL". 4-pin is fine for my limited tow needs. In the interim, I have one of those harness powered hitch covers. Thanks to both of you for the input, I think I'm 'gonna give it a go. I'll report back with result.

 

Clean Yota, I don't know if you caught this. D.A.R. sent a post with a picture and part numbers for the PT725-35120 tow harness kit. Two of the items included in it are the 81980-04050 flasher and the 82241-04060 wire helex, the same items required for the DRL mod in Tacoma's with the tow package. I ordered a PT725-35120 a few years ago for my 2012, but my rig didn't have the pre-existing 4P plug beneath the LH kick panel as all 2005-2011's did so I had to return it. So I don't know, in my case, how DRL and the tow harness will interface. I'd sure appreciate more of your Tacoma insights. Thanks.

Wow, you're good, this is the 4P connector I was talking about. I did this mod on my '06 years ago, and you're right, it's a sneaky little devil. I wanted to do like on my '12, so I took the lower dash apart, but could not find it, anywhere. You've encouraged me to look again, but I'm not optimistic. A couple other reflections. As parts 82241-04060 and 81980-04050 were recommended for the DRL mod, does this mean I'd get both DRL and hitch electrical with the PT725-35120 kit? The trailer harness instructions say applicability is "vehicles with DRL", so I'm thinking the harness has something to do with the DRL system. But where does it integrate? DRL, hitch harness, and cruise control were all plug and play on the '06. Perhaps I just go with parts 82241-04050 and 81980-04040 and concede the hitch, but I know there's an answer. And I don't want after market. Thanks again for helping on my quest.

 

If you could get a picture of the rear of the BECU on your Tacoma it would assist in clearing some issues.
'05 ~11 have a turn & hazard relay AND a towing relay.
The difference in 2nd GEN are that the newer ones have the towing relay integrated into one relay. If by chance your setup has the junction block where the harness would go, it will be the same as the earlier models.(i.e. remove junction block and turn & hazard relay, replace with harness to DRL/TURN 7 Hazard relay)

Finally got some pictures, sorry they weren't more clear. And the four pin plug for the hitch harness is nowhere to be found. Curious too what the white plug in picture 397 (single red wire) is for. Production date for the truck is 03/12. Thanks in advance for anything you can decode.

 

Even though the junction block is not visible, the "plain" turn & hazard relay is.
But without finding the 4 pin connector (x2) one from the relay, the other to the bumper harness, I don't know what else to say. They could be hidden behind the harness and covered with tape.
The earlier models have a black harness strap holding back the connector to the towing relay. It is hidden behind a cross tube up above the main harness. Look above all the connectors where all wires of the dash follow the side panel towards the connector "holders".

 

First, thank you. I have left everything disassembled and will drive the Corolla until I get this figured out. Access around the left side kick panel is tight, but I'll take your advise and give it another go. As for the DRL, are you saying mine is the pre 2012 style as in some of the early 2012's used the '05-'11 relay and flasher?
