Was digging through some old photos and found these. I have a 3rd gen now and went with a simple 2 piece setup. It’s aight. But now that I’m looking back on my 1st gen, I might have to go back to something similar.

How about that scribe work :)

After scrolling through a ton of pages I decided to go this route:

3/4” plywood and some supporting lumber - wrapped in outdoor carpet.

Here is my solution. Though if I’m navigating some steep inclines it’s admittedly not the perfect option.A34026C1-B0CA-49B9-8F60-1CBB7EE99749.jpg

Also will repost pics of my system. Which I have had for over 2 years now. Built custom back and side boards and connected via pocket screws. This serves to secure the removable main box which consists of a large main compartment in the back with a hinged lid and two drawer compartments up front. One compartment holds two drawers. The bottom drawer has an integrated pull out table. The second compartment was built for a drawer but it holds two collapsible crates which have served me well. No complaints, minor upgrades coming, but it’s been a good design.

How is this design working? This is what I want to do, I’d like to put my cooler down in the drawer when I’m out wheeling, that’s what broke my current platform l, having that weight bounce around on top.

    Sadly, not much.
This is amazing! About how much did it cost to build? I am looking to upgrade my setup...

Total Cost 2 years ago was less than 300 but approximately 85 of that was for six drawer slides. I have a materials list and plans with all specs if you have a long bed and are interested. I had hoped to post the build last year but health and work got in the way.

Zactaco, sorry for the late response! I appreciate the compliments, the setup is still working really well for me. I honestly wouldn't really change anything. 90% of the time I have it in full-platform-mode. Sometimes I'll be rolling around with it half-open, and very rarely I need to pull the whole thing out. Sometimes, when I have both platforms stacked on the right side and I'm driving off-road, the braces will jump out of their slots. It's only happened a couple times, and isn't a big deal to me. If I was doing that more often, I might come up with a way to secure the braces in to the slots. Even just a nail through the end of them that inserts in to a whole in the bed plastic would work I think. I bought a long, shallow storage tote to keep things under the platform, and have been loving the simplicity/adaptability. Good luck man!

Wanted to share that I installed some LED strips for lighting the bed area. The intent was for camping/cooking on the tailgate, but I've found myself using them quite a lot in every day use. Push button switch on the left-side bed rail, one strip on the rear glass, and another strip up inside the topper. Wired with a fuse direct to the battery. Ignore my roommate's crazy hair.

I never got around to posting up my finished product pics. Drawer system came out great and I recently added an LED light strip.

Has anyone built one that sits a little higher than the bed notches? I want to sit my spare 285 underneath the platform but curious of the headspace. Thanks! *continues going back in posts*

Terrible photo I know, but that's mine. Kong stuff on left side (shovel, traction boards, hilift, etc) and in the drawer is recovery gear, tools, work tools, etc.

Mine is about 3-4” below the rails. The box is 13” tall once you account for bottom 3/16” dust shield and the 3/4” top. I have a Costco mat that is 3/4” and use light speed self inflating on top of that...so another 1-2”. Ultimately you have to military crawl in and out with the Leer 100xl being low profile. All that to say...A501A00A-F737-4E1A-9B03-0B1D147FBABF.jpg I have enough room to sleep comfortably, but I don’t have a lot of room to move around. Getting in and out is tight though. I realize this design won’t work for holding your tire but you mentioned concern about headspace. Hope that helps.

Thanks! This actually helps me a lot. I’ll measure how high the tire sits, estimate the platform and mattress foam and see where that leaves me.
