Not to argue, but I don’t know of any RTT that isn’t manufactured in China. So whether you buy through some group buy that’s skipping the middle man, or direct from a US brand, you’re still buying a Chinese made product.

I’m fully with you on supporting US or locally made products. Even if its costs are a little higher than others. But for the sake of most all RTT/awnings/etc., China supplies every supplier you could buy from.

That sucks I just started looking into them and it took long enough to pull my jaw off the floor for the prices it didn't warrant further investigation. Not sure I understand why they are so expensive then... I figured they were at least half way hand made in USA somewhere.. Disappointing... @Built2Ride let me know when you get into that game along with the trailers

I think the price discrepancy comes from better QC, warranty and the name. Tepui, CVT and a few others have been around for a while

Indeed. That doesn't mean that I don't think they are over priced as well.

For what they are (a platform, some poles, a cushion, and some fabric), I think $1k+ is just nuts. Maybe we should invent the RTGT (Roof Top Ground Tent) so that someone could put a ground tent on a bed platform. Then you can use whatever $20+ tent you have laying around.

I agree! I have totally been looking at youtube videos of homemade RTT out of a regular tent - if anyone wants to settle on cost effecient design I'm down to help create/fab/buy in whatever.

Also to be fair this is for my use case - not going offroad - just wanting a place to sleep at hunting/fishing/family camping trips at places I can get with my 2wd. I can see why if you are legit overlanding this or a trailer( probably where I would go) is a good investment. I got a old f250 4x4 I'm working on. - I would be interesting in @Built2Ride idea of renting it though as my guess is I would only be able to fit in a few trips a year.

I completely forgot about GFC. That’s one of few that to my knowledge are US built.

I’ve gone back and forth about throwing the cash down for preordering their upcoming SuperLite. Comparatively it’s more reasonably priced. Albeit more stripped down and without the frills (it is a GFC after all) of other more expensive options.

The reality for me is that it’s still a chunk of change to put towards something that I know will only see action a few times a year.

Not sure if you’ve seen this thread but it’s another solid option on the cheap that I’ve entertained as well.

Lots of good ideas and variations.

If that is actually made it the US I'd probably get that one. $400 more for a US product that will probably get here before the shipping container from China. Probably lighter too and you can say "I have a GFC" haha They should set up a group buy here

I should clean up my post as I don't know definitively that their SuperLite is being manufactured here or not. Truthfully I purely assumed as to my knowledge their full-on campers are (or were) 100% manufactured in the US.

Disregard, the edit comment. I don't think what I said makes any bold claims that GFC are US made. It was typed to be open ended from the rip just as I intended.

Hahah, idk why but that got a laugh out of me. Looks like a RTT that skipped leg and arm and back day.

We had ground tents, hammocks, and a pop-up camper when we bought our RTT. Our thoughts were that a RTT is more stable and less headache than a ground tent, is warmer than a hammock, and significantly more mobile than a pop-up camper. I DO NOT miss having to find a flat spot with no rocks or stumps, throwing down a ground cloth, pitching a tent with pole, airing up an air mattress, situating bedding, etc. The RTT has saved us significant amounts of money over staying in a hotel, but the same could easily be said for a ground tent as well.

Also, I mean, everyone knows the only thing that matters is looking cool and stunting on ground sleepers. :p

    Valid points/comments.

Take my feedback with a grain of salt as they are nothing more than talking points:

Bold #1: I have yet to use a ground tent than was difficult to put up, or took much more time than any RTT I’ve seen getting assembled/taken down. Yes there is new wave of RTT on the market now that go up/down much quicker. But the whole speed/efficiency has always been a ‘pro’ proclaimed by the RTT crowded that I’ve always found to be inaccurate.

Bold #2: Truth. It is undeniable that a ground dweller must find a flat/debris free area to set up and be comfortable. I guess all those RTT owners are just framing up a good picture opportunity for the gram with their leveling blocks/rocks. It’s nothing to do with getting things level/comfortable right??

Again, my comments are just to highlight that there is no right/wrong. You’re right might be my wrong and vice versa. I’m glad you’ve found what works for you. At some point I’ll likely own a RTT and will be more educated on whether it’s better/worse/the same for my needs and uses.

Ahh, I have the same one. I think the brand is DAC. I bought mine a year ago of a backpacking forum and still have yet to even take it out of the sac b/c I always tent camp on the ground. If you use yours before me, let us know how it worked for ya.
