Cooling issues? Not anymore

Not sure if this if OP wants me to start a new thread, as I am piggybacking off this idea. But hopefully we can collectively brainstorm for anyone else looking to upgrade the cooling in the 3rd gen.(that's what TW is for right?!) Disclaimer; I have no intentions to sell these..just a project for my personal truck.

I first started making some brackets to attach the fan


They would work, but I felt like it needed a little more rigidity. After looking at the OEM unit, the mount is integrated around the entire circumference of the fan motor. So I set off and purchased a whole new unit from GM, bracket and all


Here is the new radiator; CSF #7082 (which is actually made for 2nd gens, but will fit 3rd gens will a small modification I will go over later) also pictured is the OEM 3rd Gen shroud installed, and the new fan.


2nd Gen radiator mounts holes are larger diameter (1.150") compared to the 3rd gen which is smaller(sorry didn't measure)


A quick search for some bushings/hardware and we are back in business to mount it.


Clutch fan removed.. frees up ALOT of space!



Now the fun part... cut apart the stock GM fan. I only needed it for the support arms/brackets


Ground down and cleaned up the edges. Mocked up to the stock shroud


I knew it would be close by eyeballing, but we are still 3/8" off from meeting up with the shroud diameter. My plan is to make some small spacers and put a through bolt/nylon nut from each support arm into the shroud. Now when this thing spins @ XXXXXRPM I won't have to worry as much. Between the new fan and the aluminum radiator it should be SUPER COOL. Next is hooking up the electronics. The PWM module has been back ordered, but should be here next week

 

@MESO thanks for sharing. I’m in for this as a solution for the underwhelming A/C on hot days here in Nevada. Not liking the 62 pages of garbage the TSB offers for a pusher fan.

you could 3D print some spacers similar to this section, maybe 4 of them and it would be super solid

No I ended up getting it from Scoggin-Dickey which is one of the biggest GM parts dealer. Same price but free shipping and was here in a few days. Be careful as I have seen some that look like OEM replacements but are not label SPAL, and look like an inferior casting body.

I already have the spacers tested and they are super beef. They taper down into the stock plastic fan frame and sandwich to the fan shroud. 2 bolts will go through each. I feel more than confident with this mounting.






These were just quick mockup prints for fitment. Final ones will be printed this week on the HP MJF.

Would it fit having the 3 mounts on the left/right and having the wires come straight up? Would fit better that way with the larger alum radiator. Fj shroud doesn’t have the overflow bottle in the way like the Tacoma one

 

Technically you could rotate it anyway orientation and use as little as 3 brackets(triangulated). I wanted overkill so I’m putting a bracket each stock arm(7). Also the way they are clocked, there is a gap where there are no arms/brackets which works perfect because that’s where the overflow is. The best part is the fan only sticks out ~1/2” past the shroud

 

Very cool. Would definitely work for me. Fj shroud is smooth all the way around. If I just cut 1/2” out at each mount the fan would be flush, provided that there’s enough room to the radiator. Would definitely solve this issue

 

I dont think it does, it doesnt apply to manuals either. Its something to do with the transmission cooler blocking a bit of the air flow, and there is such a razor thin margin for working that just that blockage makes it not work.

 

ahh I was actually thinking that as I posted - thanks for the clarification. Guess I’m glad I’m MT with no tranny cooler lol

 

CSF actually announced that the new version of their Tacoma radiator now fits both 2nd and 3rd Gen Tacomas. It will include a Bushing Adapter Kit to fit the 3rd Gen Tacomas.

According to their info, it fits both AT and MT and 2.7L models as well!

I was just impatient and didn't want to wait lol. It's the same as 2nd gens but now has aluminum bushings.

Was going to put the allen head one the outside(where the recess is) and lock nut on the inside but the fan was alot closer than I anticipated. So they went in the other way

It's strong AF. I have no doubts it will hold together. It actually stiffened up the whole plastic shroud.

P.S I used HPS radiator hoses for a 2nd gen and they worked out perfect.
