What Have You Done To Your 3rd Gen Today?

I'm psyching myself up... or out? blow torch on my truck makes me nervous. I watched a couple youtube videos and it looks pretty manageable with a 20$ torch.

 

I like it this way...

 

A good heat gun would probably work just as well.

Be careful with heat. Get an infrared thermometer and don't get anything aluminum hotter than 250*F to 300*F. If you do, replace it.

Old Porsche 911's had aluminum front hubs and the procedure for replacing the wheel bearings involved heating the hub to expand it. Porsche said to replace the hub if it was heated to more than 280ish degrees due to it possibly getting soft.

Kind of makes me nervous when most aftermarket Powder Coats are done at 400ish degrees.... what is that doing to that aluminum rim they just threw in the oven?

So to be clear the spacers are aluminum(spidertrax), the nuts I need the get off are steel. I will be attempting to use a heat-gun but it is less targeted than a blow torch. Problems, problems...

@opeesha you have plenty of time to stress over it once you start the project. Until you know, this could easily be a non-issue. We are all here for ya! Let us know how it goes.

My guess would be that they aren’t in the oven long enough to get the aluminum up to 400 degrees. The powder coat absorbs most of the heat energy to do its thing. I have no doubt that this is much less destructive to aluminum than direct heat.

I was going to hit "Like" but I don't want to on that thread, I would be real upset if that was my situation. Which is exactly why I come here and ask for advice and experiences. To be honest I do all my own wrenching and I reached out to two shops to see if they would do the removal and both said no thank you. So that might scared me a bit. But thanks to everyone, for real. I will start with a heat gun and just start tackling it one nut at a time. Thankfully I did apply a nice layer of antiseize between the spacer and rotor.

 

I am with you 100%. I was not posting that link to be snarky at all. That is exactly the kind of dumb thing I would do -- or the kind of crazy think that would happen to me. Nothing to like about that thread ... a truly awful situation.

Best of luck to you with your project. Honestly, I would be too nervous to do what you are doing.

 

Unexpectedly found some time on my hands today so I sprayed my factory non TRD skid plate and “installed” T rex

 

Installed these bad boys from Locked Offroad...one of the more fun installs tbh

 

Filled and checked the trans fluid. Truck only has 200 miles on but was about a 1/2 quart low.

 

Lift and trimming specs to fit the 295s please......
