I am on the search for a tool box for a short bed that sits down flush with, or slightly lower than the sides of the bed, but also is built around the wheel wells. I seen a guy on cardomain that built one before, but i cant find it right now if my life depended on it. Ive spent all day searching. If anyone has one or knows who i am talking about please help me out.

I believe that style is referred to as a chest-style toolbox . I think UWS makes one , I'll have a look around .

ok. I know this is kind of humorous, but its the only way i can explain it. just ignore the tool box on this truck (not mine). and the one i want would be the orange outline.

Maybe it is a cross box for a narrower bed truck ?

I thought about going that route but need a simple chest to fit a hi lift jack on the bed side since I have a short bed. A Weatherguard chest will fit under a tonneau cover, even when on top of a bed mat.

No link but be warned they are the most expensive and toughest chests made. I stopped a guy on a traffic stop once and gave him a warning and we were joking and laughing. I asked him abou the the waetherguard chest I saw in his bed and he stopped laughing and got this real serious and stern look on his face all of a sudden. In a real dead pan voice he said, "It is by far the finest tool box I have ever used." I left it at that and let him go casue he kind of freaked me out. They are almost twice the price of many cheaper brands and the only low pro that fits under the rails is a straight box, chest type. Weatherguard does not list it as Tacoma compatible becasue it must be bolted to the bed and Toyota does not recomend drilling holes in the bed.

They come in silver or black and everyone with the black says its the only black finish they have ever used on a box that didnt peel, scratch, or discolor in the sun.

UWS has a trapezoidal box thats larger but slightly taller, the black finish is not as tough, and the locking mechanism is not as good. Do some research on Weatherguard before you write em off as too expensive.

Just remember that anything that goes over the wheel well will make the bed space too short to bolt a hilift on the side so you have to decide if its worth it to mount it elsewhere. I am going to put a Truxedo Lo Pro QT over everything to protect the box and hilift. A similar idea to yours.
