I’m looking into buying a supercharger for my truck in the near future and I’m wondering what would be the best one for my truck. I’m not hunting huge power gains, I just need something to help with towing a trailer. What’s the pros and cons of each style( urd, or Magnuson). And what one would you guys choose and why.
    Thanks

I'd go with the magnuson for towing. It's a roots style blower so torque will be lower down in the power band vs the URD blower

What @BassAckwards said. Roots makes more torque sooner/instant boost. Make sure to tune it.
Centrifugal supercharger builds boost with rpm, so peak boost at peak rpm. I have a friend who road races with a Rotrex Centrifugal type and has broken the gears in side with mis shifting and another with engine braking. The sudden change in engine speed tears them apart.

I have the Magnuson blower. I gained absolutely nothing at all in low end power. It’s all at higher RPM. I don’t recommend. OV Tune Premium 2.0 had better low end and didn’t cost me $6,500.

You have a 3.5? Everything working right? Just seems odd.

Everything seems normal. No leaks or check engine light. Truck runs like stock with extra ooomph across the board. Except below 3,000 RPM. That stayed the same. OV 2.0 had better low end.

Interesting. Everything else stock? I'm just wondering if your bypass is closing properly. Can you modulate it by hand?

Yeah everything is stock. I can move it no problem by hand with the car off.

On the 2nd Gen Magnuson blower, the gains down low we’re not initially impressive. Overall was a little disappointing for the price. Swap to some smaller pulley sizes and it really changed the driving experience to where low end power came on sooner and was significantly more noticeable.

Hey @Torspd wanna help this guy see if he is making boost?

@Bascoma you could be fighting with some tuning, this might be an issue where this particular SC doesn't make world changing power, or it could be the most realistic scenario where this 3.5L doesn't make a hell of a lot down low. Adding 30% to 150hp is a lot different than adding 30% to 250hp.

To his point I wasn't impressed with my S/C on my 4.0 either until I went to a smaller pulley...

I remember @OVTune discussing a torque limiting feature in the low rpm areas, in the tune. They searched and searched then finally found it. I don't remember the exact details though.

This may be part of the issue with disappointment in low end performance?

I have recommended this in the other Magnuson thread, for the 3rd Gens. I'll repeat here. @Bascoma , grab a caliper, and take a measurement of the pulley snout, as best you can. Post up the diameter. If it happens to be the same size and the 2 Gen's snout, then a potential pulley swap is already available. Lots of "IF's" but no one will know until it is measured.

Secondly, a tune from OVTUNE is needed to best the one that comes with the kit. Should they be willing.

I’ll be happy to measure when I get a chance. Unfortunately Mat has said that he has no plans to make a run for the Magnuson kit “at this time”. I use quotes because that is what he said and I interpret it as, YOU’RE SAYING THERE’S A CHANCE! Lol

Wonder how his base kit tune would do being straight flashed over and used on the Magnuson kit? Hmmm.

(Yes I know how all of that works. Shhh)

Also of note, back in the day before taking the jump to a full standalone for a 2nd Gen turbo kit, using the TRD s/c flash with the TRD injectors worked quite well. As long as the boost was kept around 5-6 psi.

I think you would be a lot further ahead than relying on the Mag supplied tune. If there is a dyno near you with someone willing to learn the software, a few hours of time will likely be well rewarded.

My understanding is that their current tune is not based on OVT 2.0, but a previous release. Most likely 1.05, or even the stock Toyota calibration. That may have changed so don't hold it as gospel.

I have the pulley info in my install and mods thread. 5.5" lower pulley, 3.5"/90mm upper. The snout behind the pulley is about 58.69mm in diameter, the support ribs will need be clearanced before getting too much smaller.... but yes, the pulley can be swapped.
