howdy all, I recently posted in North East before realizing Virginia's not as North as some might think. I'll be spending Columbus Day weekend in VA Beach with friends and I want to do some surf fishing where I can take my Taco onto the beach. I have heard Assateague, but are there any other areas in VA that might work?

Thanks in advance, and let me know if anyone wants to meetup while I'm down!

No other places in Va. to drive on the beach. if you're gonna be in the beach area... Might as well head down the road a couple hours to the OBX. for your beach driving and surf fishing.

    My thoughts.

I think that's looking like it'll have to be the plan.

Assateague VA or MD side. About 2 - 2.5 hour drive from VA beach. OBX is your better bet. A permit is required in OBX and Assateague.

Do you know from whom or from where I would have to obtain the OBX permit?

    ^^ What he said.

Also, if you want to go north up to Corolla (the top of NC12), NO pass is needed. only during the summer for parking. South of here, you DO need a permit.

While I'm at it.... Don't even think about the possibility of driving from VA beach (Sandbridge thru False Cape state park) straight down to the north side of Corolla. You cannot do it. This question comes up from time to time. You have to go around.

Didn't even think about Corolla area. Still need to go there been going to OBX my whole life and haven't been north at the split yet. The things I would do to make the drive from VA beach to Corolla on the beach though....

    Haha. DO IT!

Keep an eye in the OBX thread too, as your trip gets closer for better info. Don't be afraid to ask questions either.

Is it impassable or just not allowed?

I would love to hit that, but my self recovery gear looks a little lacking. I do have a pancake compressor, but I need to get at least some of those spike mats first. Ideally I'd also like to get a bumper with a winch, so I may end up having to wait until next year :-(

This! Corolla has a nice beach and since you don’t need a permit until next summer it’s a good option. I caught a few small spot fish, nothing special but I’m sure there is a ton more to catch. I just didn’t have much bait with me.

Not allowed as far as I know. I think there is also gates that block the road. Its pretty cool history though. Apparently there used to be people the commuted to work in VA beach from corolla on the beach. Wish they would allow it again.

    Throwing me off a little.

There is a fence at the border between Va. and NC. you cannot get thru it or to it from the VA side.. The beach is passable on the NC side. Just air down and have a shovel or some traction boards if you want 'em. The boards would be a good idea, but I've never had a problem yet (knock on wood).
