2016 OVTune Tacoma 3.5L Manual Transmission / Engine ECU Reflash

There might be a small Rev Hang improvement in there, but it was not really addressed. There was a test tune before the release, but it caused limp modes.

The edits, esp @92ehatch 's work, seem to lessen it, bit I am still feeling it out. Just a few drives. See the threads in the Perf and Tuning section.

I am kind of reading this thread from beginning and its crazy what some guys had to go through haha. Especially the guys with the 2016s with the first toyota calibration 04B10. Now i can understand where the complaints regarding the stock tune came from, it did seem like a very shitty tune. My truck came with 04A70 and then got updated by my dealer to 04A71, which seems to be light years ahead of the earlier calibrations. Now, i am really questioning Toyota engineers haha, how the heck could they have tuned the trucks like that and sold them to people. Like wtf happened? They were in a rush or simply did not care since MT is not that popular? Would love to know their reasoning. Still, in my mind there is nothing better out there that toyota/lexus products, I just find all this stuff very interesting.

I did not know there were tunes before the 1.05 and there were bugs that needed to be worked out. Mat did an awesome job, I can see it now.

 

Oof. While the old info is a good basis, it was also a painful climb. I had some real bad misconceptions way back there.

From my understanding, Toyota looked at this as a development vehicle for the upcoming TGNA-F with the 3.5 being the big motor. Given what has been posted, it seems they started to run late, then said screw it, and let it fly.

By all comparisons, 04A70 was not much different than 04B12. It was driveable, but not much else. The TSB tunes were a huge leap, but still short of what we deserved and what the HW is good for.

Yep. The fact that he delivered after all the issues and roadblocks is amazing. The goons are still hammering away though.

 

if you bought a nearly $40k truck and aren't totally happy with it, then another ~$1k, if you do it right (tune selection, adm, relearning the driving dynamics, etc) will get you much happier than you ever expected from that bigass purchase. much happier.

Did not know that 04A70 was similar to 04B12, I assumed the stock tunes were improved as the years went by. I guess i am easy to please, i did drive a 4.slow ranger for about 7 years ha! Honestly this taco felt like a rocket ship when i just got it but then of course you get used to it and want more. Then, i started reading TW and here i am I have never had so many mods on any of my vehicles.

I started on 04b12 and that was bad enough. B13 and b14 were noticeable improvements

 

Yeah, i read about his troubles. Poor guy.

 

The Taco certainly felt great out of the gate. It just never got that familiarity or the power. The TSB allowed mostly normal, relaxed shifts and a small torque bump.

I was annoyed with other tunes on our cars but never enough to actually mess with them.

 

The ranger was the newest vehicle i ve owned. It had oldschool mazda tranny that was pretty rough with long ass shifts. The gear lever was like 2 feet long haha. My buddy drove it and laughed. I had early 90s and late 80s cars before that, all MTs. Well and the 2003 accord with AT which i just hated and couldnt wait to get rid of it.

Tacoma felt like a cadillac in comparison to the vehicles i had. Now, im understanding that it could be so much better. Never in a million years i thought i would be tuning my engine, haha. Now im looking at the URD y-pipes... damn you TW!

 

Yes, but the Rangers were great in their own way. I grew up in the malaise era. Back then, there was no making the shittastic better.

The Taco just needed a tweak.

 

Yes, they were great. Very reliable and great offroad, just horrible on gas and 207 hp... I wish i couldve kept her though. Im so paranoid when i take my taco into the bush.

Fortunately that's now ancient history!

 

Has anyone ever thought about creating specific threads for each ECU so that those who want to share have a place for a specific ECU?

Agreed. But perhaps this thread is sufficient. I mean, there are far less MT then AT so perhaps not necessary....

 

I am creating threads for each 3D and 4D map edit that I do. The Stock values are given so that different ECU IDs can be compared at the start before someone edits their own.

 

The AT crew is doing great work, but they should really distill that stuff out of the main vF thread.
