3rd gen key for 2nd gen

I was just curious if you could program the combo remote key used in the 3rd gen (looks like a key attached to a fob) for replacement of the key/remote set of the 2nd gens. It would be cool to have the set streamlined into one key. Could just be wishful thinking but figured I'd check with the experts

The switchblade? If so, yes you can...as long as it has the same frequency as your OEM FOB.

 

Or you could just do what I did...



You can buy the housing and chipset on eBay, manually program it to work with your second gen (just make sure the frequency code matches your stock fob) and then steal an immobilizer chip from one of your keys and have it cut. Or, if you don’t want to sacrifice one of your current keys, you can pay a locksmith to program the immobilizer chip that comes with the key fob. But that adds significantly to the cost... I used the valet key that came with my truck as the chip donor and I’ve got less than $40 in mine. Been using it for years without issue.

 

I was looking for something similar as well, but couldn't find anything I liked. So, I did this as well...one of my favorite mods I've done...and really easy. The keys cost me $31 each off eBay. You just need to look at your key to see if there is a "G" or a "dot" at the base of the key shaft. Purchase the correct one (either one that has a "G" or "dot") and take it to a locksmith to get cut and programmed. The locksmith I went to was a mobile one and did the programming and cutting for $40.

Don’t really need a DIY, it’s super simple to do. If you have a functioning key you’re willing to sacrifice (I used my valet key) then you slice it open, remove the chip and slide it into the slot on the flip key housing. When you take the flip key all the way apart you’ll see the circuit board plus battery, the spring mechanism for the key to flip out and there’s a precut slot up against the top (the part that will sit closest to the ignition when the key is inserted) for the immobilizer chip. All I did was put my donor chip there and then had the key blank cut at Home Depot.

 

How long was shipping from china?

 

I bought both mine (the original wore out and wouldn’t stay programmed) on eBay from US sellers.

 

Do you still have the seller link? I have a 2010 with "dot" key

 

Mine arrived in less than 2 weeks

Make sure whatever key you buy has a compatible FCC ID which is on the back of your fob

 

Thanks for that info. how do you know if its compatible?

 

If you look at the link and click on the ebay link (for the flip key) it says its compatible with certain FCC ID
I think most if not all third party sellers will tell you which ID,s will work

 

The GQ43.... is the ID part of it

FWIW, if you’re going to steal one of your already programmed immobilizer chips, the version doesn’t matter. The “dot” versus “G” is a reference to the immobilizer chip

 

Ahhh okay. i actually have 2 OEM TOY keys coming now that I was going to have cut and programmed. I may try to find one that has the chip in to to give me another spare since i need another FOB anyway.

 

Could also get one of these then: just be sure to get a manual version because the 3rd gen automatic trucks have push start buttons
