    All,

My 2011 Tacoma 4x4 shifter cable is locked. The bushing popped off the gear mount so I purchased a new one and installed it. Now when I try to move out of park the cable is locked and wont allow it to move. See photos. Any idea what is going on? I try to move it while my foot is on the break and also by pushing the release button but the cable bar will not budge.

If I force it from park to Reverse the bushing just pops off the shifter rod due to the cable not contracting or expanding.

    Joe

Any chance you blew a fuse to the tail light or brake lights? That fuse locks up the transmission.

Tail lights and head lights appear to be working fine.

Yeah that is also working. I read a few articles that the fuse might be blown so I might try to replace those but I am not sure why they would be working if the fuse was blown.

Try lubricating the connection where the cable goes into the transmission under the truck. This connection gets gummed up making it difficult to move the gear selector. If I don’t drive mine for 3 or4 days it is VERY difficult to move. It loosens up fairly quickly after that.

I tried that the other day but I will continue to hit it with WD40 and some JD Power blast. If that doesn't work, then I am lost on what is wrong with it.

*Update - tried to lube the cable underneath and am still not having any luck.

Any chance you are on a hill and the parking prawl is bound up ? If so someone would have to push the truck uphill a few inches to take the pressure off while you take it out of park .

The steering wheel could be cranked all the way to the left or right . Sometimes you gotta get pretty agressive with the steering wheel for the ignition to unlock .
He could attempt to use the shift lock bypass to get the cable moving again or un-bolt the shifter cable from the side of the transmission to verify the nuetral safety switch isnt seized up .

All - thank you for the replies! They all helped me figure out the problem. It turns out the lever that the shifter cable was attached to under the car was so rusted out that it would not move. I hit with powerblast and a few good hits with a hammer with the cable unattached. Now I can move it out of park to drive. I am still struggling with getting it into the lower gears but a few more sprays and hits should get it moving again.
