Do you still need the remote fob to start the truck, or can the phone app do that as well (a la Tesla)?

You can start the truck, lock, unlock...see where you last parked, recent trips, check the status of your windows/doors, set driver modes and lots more!

Some more intrusive things too, like your "driver score". You can diactivate the location and drive monitoring but I prefer to have it in case someone takes it.

Basically you don't need the key with you at all then, like Tesla! Ultimate convenience since you will always have your phone with you.

Do you need an active cell signal for this to work, or is it direct communication between the truck and phone?

Oh and any thief who's canvassed your truck for a while will have a $160 cell phone jammer active to mask any tracking function, OEM or aftermarket.

You need an active wifi/data connection for the app to work on your phone, and the truck also needs able to have its own cellular connection. I believe it uses the Toyota Safety Connect (similar to OnStar) to do everything.

How much will they make you pay for that? I can do that with my 2008 Saturn but it was like $27/month.

I see. That can be quite limiting. All you have to do is go into an underground parking garage for the functions to stop working.

I won't buy it after the trial period, I wouldn't buy it if it was 5$/month, I forgot I even had the app to be honest.

It's only useful if you go out of town and want to triple check your truck is locked at home. The key fob is always in my pocket, and starting the truck in the app takes 3 times longer than using the fob.

I have SERIOUS concerns about the driver monitoring (not just the big brother aspect) BUT

BUT You have also confirmed my suspicions on the driver rating...

Case in point... It has accused your TACOMA of "FAST ACCELERATION" 3 times...

At no point in time have I EVER even heard of a 3rd gen being accused of fast acceleration!!!
(unless they were driving an eastern European car before)

Yeah my worry was that it would allow Toyota to deny warranty work based on driver rating or something dumb like that.

Those number will be higher whenever it updates, I went in the snow after work to....test..uh..traction control:anonymous:

On star works via sat, which is always present in your vehicle. All you need is a cell network signal to connect with your phone.
In other words after your bullshit wifi free trial end you can still use the lock/remote start/ diagnostic monitor anywhere in North America.

It also keeps you route history in it's solid state hard drive, notes speed driven vs speed limit, g force, inclination, steering angle, pedal position.
(some of the data is regularly uploaded to Toyota, they say it's annonomized as they use it for research)

To get map updates you have to subscribe to the service (so sign up for a month every couple years).

In Japan they already have the system setup to tie in with the insurance companies so you don't need to install a dongle... they are supposedly setting this up in North America also in the future...

Never hear of any companies dealership denying based on driver score (yet) but I have read where the freeze frame data that is recorded during a fault code reading being used to deny a warranty.

I've heard of insurance companies reading the data from car event recorders (without permission) and using that against the claim holder. Same with Police...

Where was my tinfoil hat... ahh there it is.
