I believe I have the regular flash kit (orange OBD2 connector that goes in truck port and laptop via mini usb) and I'm not sure which upgrade I need to purchase to be able to tweak my tunes for AGM battery voltage. Which one do I need to get exactly to change the alternator voltage output?

Also, is it normal when reflashing to lose about 2mpg? I recently did a regear to 5.29 and was averaging about 18.5 before on the latest tune, and I only get 16.5 now, and nothing other than the gears and 5.29 tune changed. I used the latest before, and after I changed to the 5.29 tune. It still feels like the truck wants to shift as soon as possible as before when it barely gets into the power band, even on flat ground. It just wants to get to 6th gear as fast as it can like it did for 5th before.

    Thanks!

I’d suspect regearing would result in some MPG loss, but I could be wrong. Flashing a new tune sometimes yields an MPG loss. I’d give the tune some time to settle in and see what happens. It may be the case that your MPG climbs over the next couple hundred mile. On the other hand it may not. What tune did you flash? What tune did you have before?

When you get access to VFTune, you’ll be able to adjust shift points to your liking.

Check out this thread for helpful posts on the topic.

You might even find a tune that somebody’s already created that suits your needs.

5.29’s don’t help mpg’s. Believe me I know. I lost about 2mpg’s.But the truck runs much better.

Right on. The installer said if anything the mpg should get better, and not really drop, but hopefully the tune just needs to adjust. I got revolution gears which howl like crazy, so the installer is going to eat the cost and re-do them with another set to fix it thankfully.

Before I was running the latest stock premium tune for 04b04. I have 31.6" tires, basically 1" more than stock but have been running them for awhile. For the re-flash I just did the same tune but the 5.29 version with premium, and stock tire size. Almost seems like the stock tune felt better than the 5.29 one for some reason haha.

So for vftune, if I wanted to edit my own maps, which one do I buy exactly?

There's the vfTune pack and vforest tuner software. Not sure which one I need to purchase and what the process is.

I could try to find someone elses tune I suppose. Thanks for the quick info!

This was taken from the first post of this thread. Sounds like you need a VFTuner license for $79. You can download the software from the OV’s website. There will be some back and forth emailing regarding system ID and master key. I’m not sure, but since you already have a flash kit, you may be able to get the tune pack as part of your license, but you’ll have to request it.

Sounds like the new gears are to blame for the dip in MPG. Hopefully it’ll get at least a little better as the tune settles. As far as shift points, etc- VFTuner is amazing. Definitely check out the thread I posted previously. Mat and several others have posted ways to make these adjustments.

Thanks for that info! I scoured his site for the $80 upgrade and couldn't find it anywhere, and could only get to it through your link which is really strange. Even under the page which explains the upgrade options, the link only goes to the full priced software. No wonder I was lost haha.

I'll do the upgrade and try to edit some of my things, including the shift points. Thanks again!

Can someone confirm they had ever received an email from the ovtune news letter ? I signed up 3 times over the last year or more and never got an email . I just thought it was a future thing to come when it was ready so I never inquired about never getting anything .

I'm running into an issue trying to flash with getting `completed unsuccessfully`. Battery is older and voltage sometimes falls to 11.9, but I've tried flashing while voltage holds 12.3+ and still getting that error. 4x4 MT using the .vft files if it makes any difference. Is there a certain voltage threshold the flash manager requires before actually flashing?

I'm using macOS Catalina with Parallels Windows 10.

    Here's the log:

Messing around with a weak battery is asking for trouble. Who knows what can of worms that could open.

Are you using the flash utility from vf? Or the one from flash manager?

vft files need to use the vf flash utility 1.3.2

Your signature says 2016 tacoma but looks like you are trying to flash 04B81?
