So I own a 06 Tacoma with the 1grfe motor. I had a free oil change from the dealer I bought it from that I needed to use. Long story short the service tech said they put in 0w20 due to not even offering 5w30 anymore...Question is should I immediately drain it out? I’ve always ran 0w30 and 5w30 so I’m just curious.

yes. your truck will explode if you don't use the exact right viscosity.

    /sarcasm

Check your manual. It will list out appropriate viscosity types for your engine. It depends on climate and use, but 0w20 could very well be perfectly fine.

That said; "they don't offer 5w30" is complete BS. I bet they just ran out, and were too lazy to get more, or whatever grease monkey did the oil change didn't bother to look at what the factory recommends, and they don't want to re-do it.

If 0w20 isn't in your manual, or isn't within the current climate conditions (thinner oils typically used in winter), then I would take it back and demand them put the correct recommended oil in. Although, given what I said above, I'd just assume do it myself b/c it sounds like they are inept (not uncommon for a dealer)

I'm going out on a limb and say this is not a Toyota dealer. Take it back to have it swap out but me personally, I would have them cut me a check for $50 and I'll go buy my own to swap out.

Personally, i'd keep the oil and find an engine that recommends it and put that motor in your truck. Duh

just add some 10w-40, it will mix with 0w-20 and turn it into 5w30

The dealer screwed up. It happens. But take it back and insist they put in the correct oil and a new filter.

Sorry guys just got off the phone with the service manager. And yes this is a Toyota dealer....Apparently Toyota now specs 0w20/5w20/5w30 for the 1grfe motor. And yes they are out of 530 so he said they put 0W20 since it’s winter haha...Not sure I classify 60° out today is winter time, but that’s what I get for using my free oil change. He’s going to call me when they have 530 back in stock and do it again apparently

    dual vvti 1gr specs 0w-20

We have the single vvti 1gr which specs 5w-30

Go back and show them your manual and have them change it.

From 2005 to i think 2011, the manual calls for 5w30. After that it is 5w20. Not sure if anything actually changed with the 1G-RFE, or Toyota figured it was slightly better for EPA ratings :notsure:

    | EDIT:
    | I am withdrawing the following advice based on 3JOH22A's post here:

I think I'm going to agree with Rupp1.

If the oil spec'd is dino 5W-30, and it looks like it is from the chart above, then I can't see 0W-20 synthetic not being able to perform decently as long as you use the truck responsibly. I mean, motor oil has come a long way in the 14 years since your engine was built. (And what they put in is a synthetic, after all.)

Now, if your truck spec called for 0W-20 and the dealer put in 0W-16 GF-6B, that I'd definitely have a problem with.

I have a 2006 and my manual recommends 5W-30 for both engines. And in bold, it reads, "If SAE 5W-30 is not available, SAE 10W-30 maybe used. However, it should be replaced with SAE 5W-30 at the next oil change."

Yet another example of why you should change your own oil.
