This is my first winter with a truck. Are you guys all running with ballast in the bed? If so, what and how much?

I just click the knob over to 4Hi if there's some slush or ice on the road. One improvement with 3rd gen is the 4WD knob comes illuminated from the factory, so you don't have to dick around with modifying the switch.

With me in the truck, the front axle has 780 lb more weight than the rear axle. It would take an impractical amount of ballasting to bring the truck to 50/50 weight distribution. (In my case, 780 lb of ballast would exceed GVWR.)

None, also running all season AT tires. Just hopes and prayers, keeping below speed limit and distance.

summer times are for the speed

You need a steering angle kit to go sideways, exactly opposite of what your Tundra rack does :stirthepot:

I think with 3.5” LT kit I can reach it? Would be wide enough to properly use the rack apparently.

Hey guys, I have a question for all the sparkys in our group. I'm going to buy a portable generator to use around my property, and as a backup for my house. I want to have a transfer switch installed so I can plug the gen into the house. Can you give me an idea of how much I'll be looking at to have a transfer switch installed? Is there a reason I cannot do it myself? I'm no electrician, but I believe I can hook up the switch.

I know this isn't a Tacoma question so please forgive me if it's off side to ask here.

    Thanks.

Samesies here!! Except I know I can’t wire in the switch haha. Tired of running my “good extension cords” through the house.

    No weight for me
Our trucks are so light they’re pretty much useless in 2wd though

I just run 4x4 all the time unless im on dry pavement

No ballast persay. I keep about 100 pounds of “winter gear” in a tote strapped to the bed, and a leer cap at about 150 pounds.

I have a different driving style I guess. Immediately upon starting the truck, I push & hold Traction Off to kill it. Heading down my street, I put in 2nd gear and stand on the gas pedal to determine the “slipperyness” for today. That sets my minimum braking distance accordingly. No traction nannies, hate that crap. Personally I want to get rid of ABS too, but I brake early and rarely have it engage.

I don’t use 4WD unless I have trouble leaving a few stop signs, and once I’m going I switch back to 2WD.
On Snowpocalypse days I’ll keep’r in 4wd, but still kill the Traction and ESC.
With the manual trans I find it SUPER easy to tell when tires are slipping, cause RPM and wheel speed aren’t dickered by the torque convertor. Engine speed up = slipping. Then I back off the throttle a little.....or counter steer and keep the drift going.

I live in a small town, but often travel to Brampton and I find that big cities tend to have “greasier” snow, even longer braking distances required.

    Tires. Adequate braking distance.

    :101010: Well said
Especially about the traction control. All my winter driving so far was mostly city driving so first thing i do is 4x4 on and traction control off.
Its horrible on our trucks almost like it over reacts half a second after driver instinct kicks in so your just fighting it the whole time.(also all my vehicles pre tacoma had no ABS) That being said the rare occasion its nice to leave on for highway driving.
Im sure my driving style will change a lot this year though i live in the country now

Thank you Sir. Great addition to why TC sucks, completely agree.

    Country snow rocks!
When I had a 3-min commute, I’d leave for work 30-mins early to leave first tracks on about 15kms of dirt roads in the morning. As a bonus, there’s no lowered BMWs or beat-ass Hyundais on summer tires clogging up the roads either.

4x4 on our trucks (no center diff) also reduces braking distance on slippery surfaces:

Traction control also works differently in 4x4 (no throttle cut).

My apologies. I get a little excited, winter driving is the closest I get to participating in a winter sport.

    Sleds: too cold
Gravity games: too crashy into trees
    Hockey: skating hurts
