    GM All,

Has anyone installed a supercharger on a 2.7 3rd Gen. and did it significantly boost the power of the truck? My dad recently passed away and he left me his 2016 Tacoma Double Cab 2.7 2wd. I’ve driven it and it feels very slow. When dad got sick he gave me his 2002 prerunner and it feels faster than the 2016. I’d like to keep the 2016 if possible but it just feels too slow for me and may just sell it and get a 4Runner. I’m definitely keeping the first Gen as that was dads favorite. Thanks.

sorry for your loss. but to be honest i would keep the first gen, and unless the 3rd gen has sentimental value for you, i would sell it, and put the money towards something worthwhile (retirement, payoff mortgage early, down payment on a home/house/property)... or take the money and payoff debts/invest it in a ROTH IRA...

URD sells a supercharger for the 3rd gen 2.7. It almost bumps the 2.7 up to stock 3.5 power but not quite. However it will probably be faster than a stock v6 because it weighs less. Also boost is fun.

You just have to ask yourself if it’s worth it to spend $5k for a supercharger, or possibly less to trade for a V6

I doubt many supercharged 4s are out there. Essier to just trade in for a V6 and will cost less money.

Thanks. I have a family member interested in purchasing our minivan which is why i was looking to possibly keep the 3rd Gen. My kids are older and we don’t need the van as much. Im squared away on financials at the moment but thanks for the advice.

yeah, hard to tell people personal finances, but we can all use more towards our retirement.. currently getting started in my Roth IRA, and have been doing my deferred comp through work.. not trusting my state retirement package.. as far as I can see into my crystal ball I should be done paying my mortgage by my retirement.... and between my state retirement, deferred comp, and Roth IRA & state paid health coverage I will be doing well.... my wife on the other hand... not so much...

Have a look at engine rebuild with doing a larger bore and pistons and an upgrade to the cam and valves before clamping down a supercharger. Try a regear too.
Talk to a reputable engine rebuild shop and see what they say about your question.

I’ll take a look at this option for both trucks. They both could use some extra power, especially going up the hills and mountains.

I like my 2.7. Then again I’m in no rush. It has its charms. Especially jumping bumps.

Sound advice for sure but it still gave me a good laugh coming from someone on this forum. If all of us followed this advice, we wouldn't spend money on 95% of the mods we do on here :)

I’m no speed demon but it’s just to slow for me. Disappointed that there’s some surface rust already starting on the frame. It’s early and I’ll address it thoroughly when I can get it home to Virginia once NY DMV gives me the title in my name.

@BartMaster1234 has a supercharged 1st gen if you want to explore that path with your 2002...

Personally I would leave the 3rd gen alone and sell it. Put the money into the 2002 or sell both and get the 4runner you want.

I would trade up, even a stock 3.5 isn’t very lively.

Totally a waste of money, but a damn cool waste of money.

I could never sell the 2002. My dad would haunt me if I did. I’m likely to sell the 2016 and my wife’s Honda Odyssey for a 4Runner but wanted to explore the possibility of keeping the 2016 as it’s mostly paid.

I can’t say from experience but it’s something I will personally do one day. I’ve talked to the owner of UrD directly in person at Toyota meets about it and picked his brain on his kit. It’s definitely a quality kit and from my research it’s going to make the truck decent at 200whp with a good linear power curve. They make a stage 2 pulley for the 2nd gen that’ll bring it up to 250whp. I haven’t seen it listed for the 2016+ but it’s something that can be discussed with URD, they have great customer service based on my previous experiences with them as well as a friend who supercharged his 3.4L. The motor itself will be able to handle the power reliably. I follow a bunch of 2tr/3rz groups and a lot of these guys make stupid power turboing these things overseas on stock internals. The stage 1 kit will be the best compromise between power and longevity.
