Has anyone ever wired a new front e-locker and wired it to the factory rear diff lock switch? I don’t know anything about lockers. Do I even need a locker in the front?

It's easier to wire the locker to stand alone, and prob much better.

If there is an e locker available I would like to know.
And yes it has to be wired separate, sometimes you can’t turn the steering wheel with front locked up. But may still need rear locker to push thru the obstacle.

I put a Harrop e-locker in mine and wired it separate and took me a weekend to complete the install. I've never messed with a clamshell style diff but i would say for me it wasnt that hard to do since i was reusing the same gears.

I measured it through the drain plug hole using a hole adapter on the dial caliper. Measured right on the ring gear tooth. Preload was measured on the pinion nut with an inch lb dial wrench. Measured everything before taking it apart and after installation.

Any chance the overseas Hilux's have an e-locker front diff that just swaps in? (+wiring of course)

I highly doubt overseas models have front lockers from the factory.

Right you are. I thought the Aussies got it from the factory to go with all the turbo diesel goodness, however, it appears they don't. So my idea is shot to h*ll. Bugger.

East Coast Gear supply will sell you a refurbished set-up front with the locker, and you ship them back your old one after install. Its pretty painless; best of both vs paying someone to do it, or stress about setting it up yourself.. Heck, just regear at the same time and kill a couple birds with one stone..:devil::devil: Like others have said, get it on a separate switch.. For every 10 times I have used my rear locker, I have used a front locker maybe once. Its one more thing great to have if you off road, but not something you want on all the time.. I would say its definitely more situational than a rear locker. Everyone wheels differently, and in different conditions based on geography and what you are into, but for me, on my FJ that has the front locker: I am ATrac 80%, Rear locked 20%, and front locked 2%. But that 2% I would be getting creative with recovery or counting on being pulled out or just not attempting if I hadn't had it.

Never had a front e-locker, but hated the old rear e-locker in my 2nd Gen OR. When I went 3rd gen I specifically ordered and SR5 so it didn’t come with the e-locker then just put ARB’s front and back. So much more pleasurable than the e was. No more fingers crossed it will go in or come out after needed.
