whatever you do, remove (or disconnect) the rear speakers. don't waste you're money replacing or even using them. that will help sq right there.

yes - i'm getting ready to upgrade my 04 extra cab...

    - HU - double din pioneer 4200 from one of the recent Amazon 30% off sales
    - front seperates - haven't decided yet. spent a great deal of time at diyma.com and have a few i'm eyeing... (would like active crossovers, but probably won't spring for them, passive for now)
    - rear sub of course
    - 4 way amp - two to the fronts, the other two mono to the sub
    - will be doing some sound deadening/etc...

here's a bit more info on why you shouldn't use rear speakers if you're interested... it's a win/win for you - saves you money on not buying extra speakers and it sounds better....

Says 4200 does not fit '03 Tacoma- is '04 any different?

not sure if there's any difference between the two years regarding fit. from the research i did, the Pioneer AVH-P4200DVD fits the 04. i liked some of the multimedia and usb input stuff on the unit, but didn't see the need for NAV (as my phone has it now) - especially for the extra amount. with the 30% off, it was very reasonable.

You are correct sir. Many thanks. Getting the Pioneer FHP800BT
Btw Crutchfield is a fair bit more expensive than even Amazon- almost $75.

What else do I need to fit this- wiring harness? DIN fitment kit?

Yeah, it's an 8" shallow-mount sub. I only did the passenger side so I could keep the driver side storage for the jack, recovery strap, tie-downs, etc.

Unfortunately, it was too tough to make it such that it was easily repeatable due to the irregular shape of the floor in that area. Although I wish I could have created a mold; I'm betting I would have sold quite a few by now.

For the fronts, i went with Infiniti Kappa separates; although there isn't unlimited depth, most standard 6.5's fit just fine. The model numbers I used are in the description of my original post.

Hey, that's a sweet setup you got there. I am currently pondering mods and yours is the closest I've seen to what I may like to do.

How did the tweeters fit in the door panels? Could you put them behind the stock grills easily? And what about the crossovers? Did you stick them under the center dash/console, or in the doors?

    Thanks man!

The tweeters didn't fit exactly; I had to tweak the factory bracket a bit, but overall, it wasn't too bad. ...and I was able to keep the factory grills, which was important as I wanted to keep it as stock-looking as possible.

I ended up putting the crossovers inside the door panel, between the door panel itself and the dynamatted door. I made a custom bracket to which the crossovers are mounted and that bracket is screwed into the door...

Nice job. May try to replicate that sub. I know my kids will like it.

I think I'm just going to change the HU and the front speakers add the stand alone Infinity powered sub which I already have and see how that sounds.

Would the Infinity 6x 8 coax be better choice than 6.5?

Got the Pioneer mounted. Sorry for the bad pics but its very reflective. It fits well and looks almost factory IMO. Better- the lights automatically dim at nite or can be turned off altogether (reactivated by pushing any button or the vol. knob).

The stock speakers driven by the Pioneers 4 x 50w internal amps are surprisingly good (for stockers anyway) with adequate bass, mid-bass and the treble is ok but there is a lot of upper mid-range energy that I could not get rid of with EQ. So goodbye speakers.
