Bed racks for 1st gens. Where to find?

I've checked all the vendors and did a search.
Looking for a bed rack for a sb/dc that I can mount behind my toolbox to carry my spare on top and storage underneath.
Anyone have any luck? Thanks.

 

I would build bed bars simliar to the ones Boyd bought from ATO and just buy a general roof rack/basket and mount on it.

Thats what jamie did with his 2nd gen i believe.

 

We don't have a rail mount system. I found a great roof rack, little pricey.
I just either have to fabricate or buy something to mount it to.

Check out his build, he made a nice bed rack, and just mounted it to the inside edge of the bed.

I think most all i have seen with a bed rack have had to make the mounting system.

 

Just installed this this a.m. Thule TK14 direct mount feet, Tracker II feet, and 65" load bars. The whole set up comes off in less than 5 mins. just unlock and push 4 buttons and its off.
Gonna buy a LoadWarrior basket to replace the middle tray when we go camping. It's seriously sturdy and doesn't sacrifice the ability to haul big stuff.

 

hmmm... nice. Thats kinda what i'm looking for. So the entire thing is stock and meant for the bed? Or was it altered from a roof system?

 

The way I built mine (it was linked by 01tacoprerunner) would easily fit behind a tool box. I actually did that on purpose in case i buy a toolbox later. I have some bike racks to mount to it, but I'll wait until spring since it's not really biking weather.

If you can do some simple fabrication you can easily build something like mine. I was really an easy project and works great.

 

The TK14 kit is the feet and they use flare nuts to mount, it is actually meant to mount a roof rack to a metal car roof, mobile home or topper. You just mark your spots, drill the holes and then use the supplied flare tool to seat the anchors. The kit is pretty comprehensive and even includes the bits. Then you need the Tracker feet and load bars of your choice(you will need at least 65", but they do some longer).

I used the TK14 kit on my old Durango due to the lack of a proper rack to fit on the factory rack. It sealed great and never leaked in three years, so I figured it would work great on the bed rails. You can set them as close or as far apart as you want. Thule makes some good stuff. Let me know if I can answer any other questions.

I was very impressed with the bed rack you built. I would love to be able to mount an expedition tent on something like that. Thinking seriously about getting one of these:

Unfortunately I do not have the fab skills so maybe this thule kit is the way to go. Do you know of any other options for those of us who are fabrication challenged?

 

Here's my setup. Works awesome! WHen not in use the rack itself folds down. I can also just take the entire assembly out OR just pull the pin and remove just the rack and leave the wood in the bed. I really like this setup.

They are pretty stout. The bars would hold, I would question of the feet would. I guess since the weight is being spread out that it would be good. Your best bet would be to e-mail Thule and ask them what they think. The bikes are around 27lbs each at the heaviest and I figure I could load the basket up pretty good. I (265lbs)stood on it and gave it the bounce test and it seemed extremely solid.

 

That tent is ridiculous awesome.

 

My biggest question on this tent thing is: how is it supported? does the ladder support the half of the tent that's hanging over the edge? or are there bars underneath, going out from the truck? I dunno how I would feel, hanging 6 feet above the ground, not on top of a roof. Or a rack in this case, and then only maybe 4 feet off the ground. Still! Am I correct in deducing that the ladder supports the tent?
