Just got off the phone with Heffner Toyota In Kitchener, Ontario. They will infact build me a Toyota right from the factory. Its going to take 2 to 3 months. MT TRD offroad.
I didn't think that was true but it turns out they will! AND They DO NOT require a deposit. Outstanding.

Hi Ryan! Great, thoughtful build you’ve done. You had a lot of suspension mods that I didn’t do and was wondering your thoughts why you thought they were necessary. Specifically I’m thinking on the rear spring hangers and the two front suspension gussets. Were they necessary for the camper or do you use the truck w/o the camper for off-roading?

Not super interested in spending more money but don’t want to breakdown in Timbuktu either

Also I’d like to see what your thoughts are on upgrading the brakes. So far, I was only thinking of changing the front brakes to the TRD pads. After having the camper on for 10,000 miles, the braking seems fine, but did notice some hot rotors coming down a CO pass, but no warping...yet. Thought about installing some slotted rotors but holding off for now

    Thanks - Andy

I have the same question. My next upgrade will be brakes. I pull a 3500lb Opus4. I was just looking at stoptech big brake kits to include rear disc brakes. They verified everything is compatible with crawl control

Look into the 4runner swaps, should be like a quarter of the price.

    Hi Andy!

I did the hammer hangers after talking with Eric @ARCHIVE about the benefits, "I think the Hammer hangers will make several improvements for you, ride quality yes, but also a reduction in lean and sway with camper onboard, that the stock hangers exhibit due to flexing. So you should have a good improvement in handling."

The Marlin HD front cam tab gussets, @su.brat was always saying these are the best mod for the front, and that they compliment the hammer hangers. Also, both Hammer Hangers, and Marlin HD tabs provide additional support against rock hits, etc. I wanted this truck to be bulletproof, and I wanted to do it all at once. The spindles from @glorifiedwelder were the icing on the cake, so easy to order and install. Besides, I didn't want my demise to be a bent spindle after installing all these mods. This truck is fast on pavement, strong with weight, and flexible in the dirt.

That brings me to the brakes @daltondrose , @MESO did something great here with the SOS kits, and I'm tempted to do that too, but I may settle for the truck and tow z36 pads with cross drilled slotted rotors and steel braided lines, as these fixed the front end shutters on my last 01 Taco. It's not necessarily the weight of the camper, because it seems fine now, it's the high speed runs (empty) with late breaking into corners. I come from a street bike background, so late braking is super important, and the brakes need to be good (big).

    Hope this helps! Safe travels!

ECGS recommended 5.29 gears with me and seemed baffled that is asked for 4.88. The guy in the phone was telling me they put 5.29 in bone stock trucks. They also said the do more Toyota diffs than anyone.

I guess it depends on who you ask. I have a buddy with a 2016 SR5 DCLB with stock everything, and he doesn't seem to think there are any problems with the gearing. :notsure: I had Steven @ECGS recommend 4:88's. I also don't doubt they do the most Tacos. Maybe they've changed their tune since August 2019. FWIW, if my truck were a short bed, and I wanted to crawl, then I'd build it with 5:29's for sure. But mine's a long bed with lots of high speed runs and highway driving with my camper on the back. Besides, I have crawl control, so I don't need those super low gears for crawling.

If I’m not mistaken too speed with 5.29 is 78~80 mph. What’s tops for 4.88?

    I haven't topped out with 33's and 4:88, but I have seen 90+

Good to know. I just don’t know if 78-80 is enough. A lot of times that’s cruising speeds on some highways

I’ve hit 90 with 35’s and 5.29’s. I always scratch my head over this and then always forget to test max speed when on the freeway. Ha!

Before dropping a bunch of cash on installing rear discs I’d really want to see some tangible, measurable improvement. I was shocked that the Tacos still use drum brakes. im sure it’s a cost savings for them

Likewise, in my overweight truck I’ve easily hit 75, while running about 3,500 rpm. Definitely would be drag limited, not rev limited

I totally agree! I’m also intrigued with the front rotor, pad, SS brake line upgrade. I haven’t seen much regarding a similar type of upgrade for the rear drums...

Sup fellas, just finished breaking my 5.29’s (500 miles), finally got up to high way speeds and realizing I have a vibration at 58-65 ,it dies down a bit after ,anything under 55 butter smooth. Prior to regear I can go pass 90+ No problem I’m on icon stage 4 with heavy Dakar’s 285 70 17 ko2s. From what ive read and trying to understand is that the gears are spinning the Drive shaft at a much higher speed, and can cause vibration at certain mph. Am I in the right direction here ? Should I try balancing the shafts, or should I just order the Tom wood single peace. Any suggestions are appreciated ty
