I have a 2012 TRD sport and was wondering if anyone here has or knows of anyone whose made their hood scoop functional? And if so, how'd you make it happen?

He's right though. Where the hood scoop is and how the front of the truck is designed it's in a low pressure spot, you would actually loose performance if you made it a functional one.

Stuff an airsoft in there. That would put the fun in functional.

Its been done . There are claims up to 17 horsepower gain
    https://www.tacomaworld.com/threads/functional-hood-scoop.29737/

Some guys say opening it up allows more heat to escape when 4 wheeling but I beleive this needs to be proven .I think it would work well at hydro locking your engine while water crossing .
As far as function . It functions well as a bug deflector and a makes a perfect blind spot when the sun is shining .

Still think you will make more power to the ground with the light bar mod

I would like to know if anyone bothered to cut a hole in there hood right over there air filter and put a scoop on the hole.

Can tell you adding a Snorkle didnt seem to do much.....cannot see how redirecting the hood scoop would do anything but make a functional water trough wheeling.

The scoop would have to be raised several inches to get over the layer of air that sits on the sheet metal surface. That's why racers in the 70s came out with the snorkel hood scoop. To overcome this layer of pretty much 'dead air.

A snorkel is more restricted cuse the air will have to travel longer to get to the engine.

I have a k&n filter skin to help stop water getting behind the filter, so if I’m not to worried about water. But if it rains then I can just probably cover the scoop with tape, or just make a butterfly valve to open or close when needed

Of course the stupid way is to add a leaf blower and hook up the the hose to the air box

    It does
it doesn’t matter how long or how many bends a pipe, tube, box, whatever it is. If it’s pressurized from air being rammed into the intake it’s going to push. Being the air is sucked at one end and pushed in the intake from the driving velocity it’s going to flow.
I would be half tempted to say that a snorkel will “flow” better as it has only 1 90* bend compared to making a good scoop immediately go 90* then a couple more 90* bends.

that said if you pressurize it it doesn’t matter how many bends you have. .

I have a snorkel it helped my MPG noticeably but not significantly, no discernible performance increase.

I also opened up my hood scoop insert (removed the blanking plates and such) and I can tell you my intake temps went down a few degrees and I can see heat mirage absolutely pouring out of the vent when sitting at a light or crawling when off roading.

Beyond that not sure what else you can get for function, plumbing the scoop into the filter box won't do much if anything.

Supposedly the Hilux diesels placed their intercooler just under the hood scoop and it is functional in that application to facilitate cooling of the air charge but I suspect it's minimal and if anything works in reverse flow whereas heat would be sucked out past the intercooler while driving from the negative air pressure rather than cool air being forced in through it.

Pretty sure Subaru intercoolers are located under the hood scoop on some models, some truth may lie there

They are but as someone posted above they have "snorkel scoops" or the scoop is far forward on the hood where it can actually catch air.

Toyota's explanation for making the scoop nonfunctional is that it creates unwanted turbulence under the hood and noted that their engine bays are about 20° cooler than the competition on average and so adding a functional scoop wouldn't really matter.
