Toyota going CHEAP..!

The Tacoma is an average priced, a bit above average reliability and below average quality tech/amenities truck. Not sure why there are many surprises about it. If you're in the market for a small(ish) truck there isn't much better for reliability if that's what the deciding factor is. If you like nice stuff, more power, better tow ratings, etc, the Tacoma isn't for you.

 

My wife considers vehicles an A-B appliance and the only thing she ever really cares about is color (she prefers red) and heated seats. Last Summer she asked me to find her a small truck as she and our son do a lot of mountain biking, kayaking, etc. She first thought Ridgeline for no other reason than my sister has one so she's seen it and ridden in it. I immediately thought Tacoma and looking around I found a '18, TRD OR 4x4 Inferno on a local, large-volume used lot. I told her to go drive it and she immediately gave it a thumbs-up. 5 months later she has nothing but love for her "Orange Taco"......even without heated seats...

 

Wife sounds interesting, so what do you do? Bird watching?

Just what I was thinking. I moved over to my Tacoma from a loaded Lariat FX4, I dismay research and knew the differences. I made some changes, but have a vehicle that will last much longer and provides additional space in my driveway due to size. Also a bit cheaper on the wallet (with the exception of mods).

 

If you were a good husband, you'd have her heated seats installed in a day's time.

Heated seat thread here. No excuses, no snarking, and no sniveling... hop to it. Man up is all I'm saying....

I second that. A co-worker of mine picked up a 2020 f150 eco-boost about a month ago and he's already had it towed to the dealership a couple times for fuel pump related issues.

 

My '16 F350 has the backup camera that comes in and out. I have a solid bed topper with no windows, so there is really no seeing behind myself without the camera. I finally tagged a car in a parking lot with it. Took it to the dealer and they couldn't find an issue. Said it should be throwing a code if the camera went bad. 55k miles. Besides that and the death wobble, which new wheel bearings seems to have fixed, it's been a good truck. 6.2 L, SRW and weighs 9k on a daily basis.

Damn is it heavy though. Even in 4 lo with the rear locked, and on new duratracs, my crappy 20 year old AWD CRV on $50 tires will float right over soft ground. The 350 just sinks.

 

Could not agree more! Refuse to pay for anything that has a monthly or yearly renewal fee. Including 8 freaking dollars a month so I can start my vehicle up using my phone !?? Get out of here with that load of crap.

Most of you. made me realize.(.most of comments) were..were ..” learn to live with-it...it’s a Toyota truck...every truck has some short comings...! But I think Toyota could have done better...?
I just help my son change oil about a week ago..(had to purchase this special wrench)..2016 Tacoma...it was very easy..yes it seems removing skid plate took longer...NOT...you must be sure both O rings are oil and put on correctly..where as the older Tacoma ...twist on and off the oil filter...easier to change out...no special tools needed.. I have change oil in all my cars and trucks since 1968 to present.. Dad made me...lol
Every vehicle we own had a filter cartridge...

Point is...could have Toyota make owners life a bit easier?

My 86 Dodge Ram with straight front axles,,LSD..front and rear,4x4, 4 inch lift..took me everywhere...hood had springs...easy to lift up...best off road truck I ever had ,taking on those lava road trails..there was NO fishing spot I could not reach...(Big island ,Hawaii Ulua fishing) just point.. it will go...!
I will always be a fan of Toyota trucks...! Just wish Toyota could make life easier?.

"Toyota could have equipped it better," or
"Why does the new Toyota cost so much?"

My math says that these two statements have an inverse relationship.

That's the point of the aftermarket. Equip it how you like, for far cheaper than what Ma Toyota would have slapped onto the sticker price.

Wanna hear something really sad? The vast majority of drivers today have not opened their own hood with possible exception to when their battery dies, and sometimes not even then. Less than 1% of drivers would know and appreciate the convenience of hood struts, and 99.9% of that subgroup of users would have the knowledge and tools to install their own anyway. So its a bit of a no-brainer of a business case to not include them.

I have seen two exceptions to that -There are cases when the hood gets so large that it has the potential to maim or kill if you were to drop it (like your Dodge), or there are cases where they found the profit in it. Dealership price for a replacement OEM Honda hood strut: $57. Per Strut. Plus install of course. I'll happily take my cheapie set from Amazon, thanks.

 

Not sure if the 3rd gens are the same but.
I wish they had separate reservoirs for the front and rear brakes!

 

I had a 76 Olds 98 Regency...beautiful and a great ride.

 

If Tacomas came with hood struts there would be a "hood prop stick" conversion, it would cost $75 and everyone on here would be saying "Ill send you my hood struts if you pay shipping"
