2009 regular cab lift: coilovers or spacer? Let's see so pictures!

I just bought a 2009 4 cyl 5 speed 81k miles, new frame 3 months ago, I was thinking about the toytech coilovers but they say not for 4 cyl .so is just a spacer the easiest way,does anybody run 285/70/16 or 255/85/16 (pizza cutters) let's see some pictures please

Here is my regular cab on 235x85x16r. Its not that Toytech coilovers won't work for the 4 cylinder, its that the weight is lower, so you'll probably get a different height and rebound than a 6 cylinder. I run a OME heavy suspension meant for a 6 cylinder, its alittle stiff but is not an issue.

 

Thanks.. what about putting coilover take offs from a new 3rd gen offroad ,then maybe a 1 or 2 inch spacer ontop ...any one ever do that,,I seen people saying they use those coilovers and get 1.5 of lift...I'm new here so I don't know how everything works as far as posting stuff....thanks

 

Love the truck! I'm very similar This is me with 5100's all around and a Toytech aal in the back. Iv hung in with the Colorado Tacoma world guys on multiple 7 rated trails. It was nuts but due to wheel base very capable.

 

I would suggest contacting Headstrong Offroad for their recommendations. I would never recommend a front spacer lift or rear blocks but finding the right CO's / rear leaf pack lift is more difficult due to the lighter weight of a single cab 4cyl Tacoma. You will get more lift than advertised vs a V6 AC/DC tacoma which will create a less desirable ride quality and suspension/driveline related angles. Then add 33's on your lift setup and now add more issues related to clearance and necessary regearing.

 

So what is the biggest tires that people put on these trucks 265/75/16 ??

 

With the 4 cylinder, you need to think about regearing if going much bigger than stock or you will be even slower/ more under powered. Also need to do a CMC and other mods. Are you planning on offroading and taking it on trails, or more of a street truck with a better stance?

If you're planning on going with 285/75/16 tires, you will need around 2.5-3" of lift and you want to coilovers/shocks, not spacers. You'll also need wheels with the right backspacing/offset (around 16x8 with 4.5 backspacing 0 offset) to minimize any potential rubbing. You'll need to do some trimming on the flares, get rid of the mudflaps up front and beat back the pinchweld. You wil probably want to go with adjustable upper control arms as well to get the alignment dialed in better and to help push the wheel forward in the opening. The rear will need new leaf springs or AAL most likely. If you go with a smaller tire 265/75/16 tires then you can get away with around 1.5-2" of lift and avoid a lot of the other issues and $$$. Definitely take your time and do research and ask questions before spending on parts. My truck has OME 885 coils on Nitrocharger 90000 shocks for 3" of lift and it's very stiff. It also has some brand of AAL in the rear but I'm not sure which with the Nitro 90000 shocks. It has the differential drop kit, swaybar relocate kit, adjustable upper control arms, 17x8.5 wheels with -10 offset and 305/65/17 tires which do rub the cab mount slightly at full lock. You will also most likely need to replace the needle bearing on the driver's side front diff when you lift 2" or more (will have a slight rumblestrip type vibration) with the ECGS bushing. So between wheels/tires/coils/shocks/leafsprings/UCA etc., you could be looking at $2-4K depending on cost of installation if you don't do the work yourself.

 

That is alot of good information....I think 265/75 /16 is gonna be it for me... so do I use coilovers or spacers and what other good information can you give me ...thanks

 

This is 5100s set at 1.75 with .25 top plate spacers on each side and only 4 leaf oem pack and 5100s out back. Has 1.25 rake higher in back. Running 265/70/16s on 16x8 wheels with 45 offset. Also have SPC UCAs going on it at some point just to get alignment spot on vs marginal. No rubbing, no cutting and has mudflaps still.



If shell or hauling heavy stuff regularly I would do AAL or different pack. I could probably go 265/75/16 but don't really care to add more tire weight and cost. Rides good on oem SR5 coils and way less body roll vs stupid 3leaf pack that came on it. I would also take people's advice on not cheaping out on doing it right the first time. Mine is prerunner so it's needs aren't same as 4wd.

 

The least expensive subtle lift for the front would probably be the 3rd gen TRD Off Road stock shocks that somebody removed to get more lift. They should give around 1.5" of lift up front and keep the ride pretty smooth compared to aftermarket coils/shocks that lift more. Here's a thread talking about the stock 3rd gen OR shocks/coils. I called toytech, they suggested the ULTIMATE adjustable coilovers, they have lighter springs he said,and also suggests blocks in back...aal would be too stiff
