If you’re in 4lo and shift to D, how well does it shift? Doing some research and some people doing the conversion mention a different 4wd specific ECU

Theres no ECU involved with a prerunner to 4x4. Your 2wd ecu is still used. 4x4 is activated by the ADD switch and that takes the place of the ecu.

They probably are converting their 4wd to a manual Tcase were i think you have to modify something with the 4wd ecu. since yours is a prerunner you dont have to mess with that.

I just press my add switch and pull the lever into h4 or L4. Need to be in N to put in L4 though.

Yes, i had a whole discussion about it lol. I like the idea of less friction with the add. I dont want my front shaft always spinning. Theres a reason they didnt make it like that from the factory so thats just were i stand on that haha. Im just gonna by a backup add for a trail repair if i have any issues lol.

I don’t know which route I want to go. My thought process right now is I’m going to keep the ADD. Then if it messes up, I’m going to weld it in the “on” position full time, which would be just like the FJ tube from what I gather

Yeah from what I gather people just have problems with that connector I forgot which one it was but I just took some Sauter and Sorret it and then I took the cover off and added some RTV to the CO to make sure nothing got in there sorry for the typos I’m using speech text

But they do make it like that on the FJ o_O. The only reason on the tacoma is for emissions and fuel economy. You haven't seen the guys that have snapped the whole tube and ADD shaft yet on here have you then...... There have been quite a few that have done so and switched to the FJ tube.
