I have no clue. It came like that. I like the location though. The d ring mod on that bolt got in the way sometimes. I didn’t like it much.

Is that new d-ring location a hard point?

I don’t believe so. There must be a steel plate that it threads to, though. I’ll check after work. This composite bed is strong on impacts. I’ve let go of big rounds of Eucalyptus from as high as the side rails and the bed never cracked.

For a sport bike I would do the D ring mod in the bed/frame bolts up front. I used the Dodge D rings when I did it. I know in the past tailgates haven't been the strongest so may want to consider supporting that area when loading/unloading. (I can kind of be paranoid at times though so may not be needed)

Enjoy the truck and have fun.

If you'll look up from under the truck with a bright light, between the body and the bed, you'll see their reinforcement.

It's actually a stronger setup than most people think, because it's more than just a couple of screws into the bed. So it's great for securing a lot of smaller stuff with straps and such.

However, it wouldn't be something * I * would use for a motorcycle. Or securing a car engine I was hauling, etc.

D rings under the bed bolts is right for those loads.

Better even than the corner mount pieces, as ultimately they depend on the mounting of the rail system. Of course they are much stronger than the silver bits as they have many more attachment points.

Keep in mind there is a difference in securing the load for simple travel on paved roads vs travel over rougher terrain vs a panic stop vs getting t boned and spun around. Kinda comes down to your risk tolerance for a specific load.

I’ll have to agree. It’s a bitch to put that backing plate in. I doubt a dealer is going to spend time there thinking he’s going to make more money. Looks like it’s a factory thing. Best I could do, the space is freakin tight.

    Nope, not on my '06.
Did over 60 trackdays hauling with my '06, 2 ratchet straps and the adjustable rings in the side rails. Never a problem.

Just a post to note the attached torque specs. The 60ft-lbs that I guessed was too high.

Just wanted to add that if anyone is looking for the part number for those hooks at the front the OP originally messaged about the pic shows the correct Toyota part# for them.
My 2023 had the holes and backing plate, but no hooks. It's a trail and one of those holes was used for the in bed cooler and storage which I removed.
Those tie down hooks aren't cheap though! $25 a piece...
    Toyota Part #66312-0C010

Additionally, the bolt needed is going to be an M8-1.25x25mm. A 20mm is probably long enough to work and a 30mm would probably work as well as long as the shaft near the head isn't void of too large of an area of thread. My local hardware didn't have any 30mm for me to check that out so I went with the 25mm.
