Rear, Front and Transfer case oil change

I have 65,000 miles on my truck. I have never changed the oil in any of these. Would you Change it at this point? I have already purchased the oil. Ig you say yes, do I need any special tools? A pump to get the oil back in? Any help would be appreciated!!

 

owners manual states 15000 for the front and rear diffs

 

in the '11 maintenance schedule:

the regular intervals, excluding special conditions towing schedule, do not state intervals for changing the diff or transfer case oils. they merely state to check them.

within the regular intervals, the rear diff oil should be changed every 30k IF you have a mechanical LSD. but otherwise they do not specify any intervals whatsoever.

I had all mine changed out at 15,000 miles. I figured if there was any metal shavings from being new it would be good to get them out (plus I wanted the dealership to break free the drain/fill plugs .) I plan to change them every 25,000.

 

I would change them if I were you, but honestly I wouldn't fret about being overdue on the service schedule. I've seen plenty of vehicles that have been used into the high 100,000s and never had anything but engine oil changed.

You will definitely want a pump to get oil back in the transfer case, and it would probably be helpful for the differentials also.

i did mine at 67k bought it used and didn't know if it had been done yet, it's not that hard, just get a good pump and if you have a LSD (sport) make sure you DONT use synthetic oil, just use regular oil with a 4oz tube of friction modifier, i ended up doing this and then going with mobile 1 full synthetic in the front diff/transfer case

 

My 2 cents after changing all diffs/transfer twice at around 25K each time... (guessing at least 1000mi of 4Hi per winter and on 7th winter), 15K is overkill. For most 30K is fine.

 

I did all three not too long ago. The rear had 10k on the oil and it was filthy, the t-case had 30k and was clean and the front diff had 30k and was filthy. So I would recommend changing them at the least 30k miles. Yes you need a pump for the front diff and t-case but not necessary for the rear diff if you have the quart size bottles.

 

buy the oil in the gallon container, and buy the cheapo hand pump that fits everyone of those bottles.

it isnt the easiest,way, because you are under the car all cramped pumping away feverishly like some pervert at an (fill in funny blank as you please)..

I have roughly the same question but I have a bit more miles. I have not done the front, rear, or trans case since i have owned the truck and it has 177,000 on it now. Should I do them or just leave alone what is not broken.?.?.?

Ok, may be a dumb question but where is the transfercase on my 09 off road dbl cab. I see the write ups on the diffs but just want to make sure in the trasnsfer case.

I would. I would probably take it to the dealer and let then crack open that front diff because you may strip the drain plug. I almost did.

cool thanks.. Is there a need to be comcerned about doing all this work yourself and then should something happen the dealer not cover it under warrenty?

 

If you run it without oil then the dealer probably wouldn't cover it unless you got creative and put some in before you went there but I don't suggest that. It really is simple. Open the fill plug first then place pan under drain plug. Open the drain plug and let it drain a couple minutes and close it back up and fill it till it starts coming out of the fill hole and put the fill plug back in. My point is, it's really easy and not much to mess up. If you feel that you are stripping a plug bring it to the dealer to do that one particular part if you're not comfortable. It's just like changing the motor oil. If you aren't comfortable that's fine just bring it in.
