Hi guys - I'm getting ready to pull the trigger on this setup. Curious what part of the TOYK974 kit is being used? I have seen other posts where the factory brackets were used. Will this kit flush mount the unit?

It is not used, no part of that kit aids the installation of this unit. I believe you would use TOYK974 for a single or double DIN head unit. The pioneer is larger than double DIN.

Thanks guys. I have been going over the two main threads for the install and with the factory brackets couldn't see where the kit helped. These threads are awesome and I'm really thankful for all of the information everyone has provided. I am creating a cheat sheet for my install. Pulled the trigger and will install next week.

My install is a tiny bit different than @piff in that I drilled some holes in the wrong spot which I then had to drill extra holes after the fact :) Pretty close though but I was dead set on keeping the two pieces of the pioneer attached to each other as it was designed for. I like piff's minimalist approach, why drill what you don't have to, but I suppose my OCD got the better of me and I overdid it.

Install took way longer than I anticipated. Mic photos are here After Market Head Unit - Mic in Factory Location and I'll add what it looks like installed after my cross country. For reference, my friend and I were potatoes and could not figure out the wiring harness because we were looking at the accessory harness instead of the main harness. Full breakdown of it later, here is a photo morning after my drive of shame.

After spending the time I did the first time and since then learning to crimp and source the OEM connectors, I'm a little tempted to start selling pre-wired maestro harnesses.
Something like I buy one or two and try to source the pioneer harness somehow, pre-crimp everything, then I sell to someone who recently bought this as a bit of a swap where they send in their originals and I send them the pre-crimped stuff, then I roll that forward to the next person.

I'm not sure that's workable but I think for non-JBL the connections are all the exact same for everyone? Outside of maybe what to do with the remote output?

Just a thought for the day.

Crutchfield offers the service, but it adds an extra two days to shipping.

    This?

Yeah, I was talking about not using butt connectors, posi-lock or solder (which is what I did) but rather an OEM 090IIU connector (or perhaps two) and proper crimps on each side (M & F). No soldering, no butt connectors, maybe some braided housing and heat shrink to make it look fully professional.

I don't hate what I did with solder but I consider it less civilized now that I've got the tools and parts to do something more legit.

Downside is the connector would be wider than butt connectors but not by a lot and there is a ton of space below the head unit so I don't think that's a major problem.

Hey old post but I ordered everything on this listing except the fit kits. Did you need to solder any wires or anything or is it all plug and play?

you will need to join around 18 wires together. You can solder if you want. I just used butt connectors.

If you pull up this sheet https://images.idatalink.com/corporate/Content/Manuals/RR-TOY/ADS-RR(SR)-TOY02-DS-IG-EN_20210201.pdf then go to the Tacoma without JBL section (page 203?) it shows the wires from the main harness that you have to join together. It is all color coded and intuitive.

As long as you have the right harness it is. I recommend opening the maestro harness and the head unit box and wiring the harness indoors. For the pioneer harness, almost all the colors match to the maestro harness. Still have the wiring diagram with the sheet immediately after it for the wires that it tells you to use the manual for. I also used butt connectors (22-18 gauge, the red ones) and a crimper. BTW, a good pair of wire strippers are your best friend.

Does anybody know why crutchfield put the rca adapter in my recommend accessories?

You can use it to enable the 3.5mm aux-in via the OEM USB/Aux-in small switch piece. Though with wireless carplay, and the likelihood you have 10 of these lying around somewhere, it's likely not the most important accessory. It's also not expensive.

I have no clue where to connect it or what to connect it to. I didn't see anything to connect it to on the taco side. Do I have to dig down there to disconnect something? I have to open behind the head unit anyways because I accidentally connected the sat radio to the gps plug.

Yeah, that's the easiest one to get wrong, sat vs gps.

The pioneer has aux in which I believe is 3.5mm (black female). The maestro wiring harness from the rr2 has the male rca's. Unless I'm mis-remembering. It's between the maestro harness and the pioneer feeds, you might not have seen it if you haven't connected the pioneer pigtail with all the rca's.

I'll look again when I pull the head unit to do the gps, but I don't remember there being any on the main harness itself. I feel like I should have documented the whole installation process and uploaded it to youtube, since I couldn't find one that applied to a tacoma. Might do that once I get to the end of this coast to coast. Just spent two days snowed in because Wyoming.

Nice! I'm hopefully heading to snow in 7 days and counting the minutes. It'd be fun if we could swap places. Even better if you got stuck taking care of my kids :)

If it makes you feel any better about it, I missed it myself, asked for help, then saw how obvious it was after receiving the info I tried to pass on above. It's not super important, I've never used the 3.5mm jack and I don't see any reason why I ever would, but it's all there, just easy to miss.

I couldn't figure out where to connect that to either. Let me know if you figure it out. I know I'll probably never use the aux in but it kinda bugs me haha!
