I had a similar noise and found that the D ring mounting bolts were loose that hold the rack on. Worth checking those too.

I thought at first that the whole rack might be moving because it was loose or maybe a broken a mount but a visual inspection showed it to be rock solid on its mounts. I will confirm tho. Thanks.

I'm pretty sure it's 1994 and below that would require a dyno/tail pipe test. But some states after 25 years they don't care so they should mostly all just be OBDII. My 2000 has never been on a dyno test since I've owned it, but my '92 4Runner was back in 2012 or so. But now it's 25+ so no longer need emissions

Very sharp. You do anything to those fender flares to keep them looking black?

I used Car Guys Plastic Restorer followed up with Meguiars Hyper Dressing. That was on April 4 so the photo in this thread is 2 weeks after. It's held up at least that long. Not as shiny as the day I put it on but still a nice dark black sheen. I expect it to hold up at least a few months based on what I've read. Time will tell. Cool. does it actually retract properly every time now? Mine are terrible as I've heard many other Tacoma owners say as well. My kids are always slamming the doors on them because they don't retract properly.

    Just 3 tons of fun!!!

CA is 1999 and older needs a treadmill. I specifically asked because it's been years since I had to have a vehicle on a treadmill. All of my other vehicles have been newer than my Tacoma (2002) since I've owned my Tacoma.

In CA it's different than the general Federal emissions standards. Only gas vehicles 1975 and older are completely exempt from smog here, unless you live in a county that doesn't require it all (there are several counties in CA that don't smog, but they are the more rural ones out in the mountains or desert mostly).

and as @Uphillshunter mentioned, 1999 and older have to get tailpipe/dyno tested here, which is a whole 'nother level of smog BS to have to go through. I'm thankful I don't have to go through that one.

I basically just get OBDII tested for codes, then they pop the hood and make sure my CARB stickers are there for the supercharger and headers, then I'm on my way.

I love California, it's beautiful but I could never live there. Too much BS to deal with

The main reason I've been busy remodeling our house lately... is to sell it. I've had enough of this dump. Born, raised, and spent most of my life here.

OK, steering rack bushings. I have a 2000. This kit at Wheelers that @Digiratus kindly recommended says 01-04. I have a hard time believing that they aren't the same. Anyone verify that it does/doesn't work on an '00?

Looking in my parts lists, the rack part # is the same

@Speedytech7 knows, if I recall in our other thread he talked about the minor difference if there was one...I can't remember what it was though

I've done a mod or two
    @turbodb

They're different all right, the sleeves for the center bushing change as does the bolt size

    Just 3 tons of fun!!!

The rack did change right around 2000 iirc.

The older rack has a square protruding out that adjusts the rack guide. The newer rack has a giant allen bolt looking thing.

The newer rack's guide is better. I think @Timmah! has a video on changing the older guide out for the newer guide.
