They're different all right, the sleeves for the center bushing change as does the bolt size

 

OK, so what's my best path forward?

 

The rack did change right around 2000 iirc.

The older rack has a square protruding out that adjusts the rack guide. The newer rack has a giant allen bolt looking thing.

The newer rack's guide is better. I think @Timmah! has a video on changing the older guide out for the newer guide.

 

One of the energy suspension kits includes parts for both. I ordered it once by accident and wondered why I had leftovers haha. I've got one at home right now i can check and give a PN on if its the right one

This is true as well @turbodb, but the issue you're fighting is front the frame side changes.

Well, it did work out pretty well for him.

 

I used the energy suspension ones and haven't had an issue since I replaced them about 3.5-4 years ago

Yeah they are different.

Get a TC kit if you can. I thought the ES kit bushings were weak as hell compared to the TC bushings I was replacing with the ES ones. So much so I kept two of the TC ones in there.

I also think I have made an 01-04 kit fit Frank rack before. But was so long ago i don't remember how.

 

Suppose I'll give the tc ones a try before going to something else. Not impressed by the ES bushings.

 

I didn't even know that ES made rack bushings. I thought TC were the only ones that did. Interesting

 

I actually saw one of these go airborne once on an interstate highway in Georgia. Miracle it didn't hit another vehicle, but the kayak was totally destroyed. I was amazed at how high it went before crashing into the pavement on the side of the road.
