They say on their website that they meet or e ceed DOT, SAE, etc... Not sure where you see that they say not street legal.

Those are just words. Watch this: I meet SAE/DOT standards.

    (I don't)

As an example, stock halogen reflectors meet those standards. Led bulbs meet those standards. Together, they are not technically legal.

The point is that the person I was responding to was saying that the alpharex met the standard while the Morimotos dolid not. They both make the claim. I'll defer to @crashnburn80 on which does and does not meet the standard. From what I've read from him there is no reason Morimoto would make the claim without backing it up.

Note neither of those brands make their own lights. AlphaRex lights are manufactured by VLAND out of China, and VLAND is not regarded as a quality/reputable manufacture. Morimoto's headlights are manufactured by COPLUS out of Taiwan. COPLUS makes significantly higher quality products than VLAND.

Whomever was trying to say AlphaRex (China VLAND) is somehow SAE compliant but Morimoto (Taiwan COPLUS) is not, sounds like they are selling/pushing AlphaRex products for personal gain, or just have absolutely no idea what they are talking about. AlphaRex are poorly designed short range flood lights, not headlights. Morimotos latest v2.0 XB headlights are higher in peak output intensity than the OEM LED, but if you look at the reviews I posted earlier the OEM LED is a better designed product. If you look up the IIHS rating, IIHS gives the Tacoma OEM LED the highest score possible as an outstanding headlight.

I am 55% LED OEM Headlights and 45% Morimoto at this point. I like the response from all making it very helpful for me to educate myself and dig deeper on all the information that is out there on the internet. If I can only narrow down a place where I can either order an LED OEM Headlight or Morimoto Headlights. These headlights are not cheap and they list at $1350 each, so I must make sure that I am happy with my decision before I get it installed.

$1350 for the set not each ;)

I think I am going to go the Mori route.

None, brand new. Looking for ideas
When I purchased my truck new I selected the option for the LED package and quickly discovered that the light output was dismal compared to my wife’s Corolla LED headlights. I then followed the advice of the forum members and bought the Morimotos. They were considerably brighter. But, then a friend bought the Alpharex ones. They were even bright yet with a crisp cut off line. Ultimately I decided to spend another $1200 and bought the Alpharex. So far I’ve been happy and have had many opportunities to compare them to both the TRD OR and PRO factory LEDs and they continue to outshine and out throw the factories. Just my personal experience. I think you have to see the different lighting options in person to make B0859FAB-4976-4834-B80D-B755D42B1A73.jpg a truly informed decision. Good luck to everyone searching for an upgraded headlight solution.

    Thank you for the feedback.
How’s the quality? I bought some headlamps from Tacoma beast back in 2018 and the clear coat is coming off.
Little scare to go with aftermarket again. what do you think?

So far the quality seems to be holding up well. But, they’ve only been on my truck a few months. My truck does see a lot of off road use. I have had no issues with dust or water getting into the housing. I’m still happy with the performance and answer questions about them anytime I cross paths with another Tacoma owner who’s thinking about upgrading.

Sold them to another Tacoma owner. Same with the morimotos. Had to find a way to recoup some of my money. These headlights are not cheap

Everyone has an opinion, right? But very few have actually made the purchase. I’ve owned both morimoto and Alpharex. It seems a hard argument to make if your information comes second hand and not with actual personal comparisons.

I agree with that. I was more interested in a wider light pattern for off roading. The morimoto was a very tight light pattern without much visible light off to the side. Both are bright though and outshine the factory LED’s by a lot.
