oil change

i want to do my own oil change instead of paying 80 dollars for one.

1. im too broke

2. i want to learn...

can u guys help me out

 

First you will have to get the supplies.

Oil Filter
Oil
Oil Plug Washer

Wal-Mart has some good prices. Esp. if you use Mobile 1. You can look up your oil filter number in books they have. You will then have to make a trip to the dealer. Get the oil drain plug washer for around a dollar.

Its best to change oil on a hot engine because the oil flows out better.

First unscrew the oil fill cap and set it to the side. Next get under the truck. Find the drain plug and remove it. Have an oil pan handy and let all the oil drain into the pan until it stops. Remove the oil filter let it drain. Get the new oil filter. Put some oil on the rubber seal and put it back on. Making sure its snug but not over tight. Then get the oil drain wash and bolt put it back on. Fill your truck with the new oil and put the cap back on.

And your done!

 

That's pretty much it, I would add that you should probably pick up a filter wrench, it'll make taking the filter off much easier. On the V6 the oil from the filter will want to drip all over your serpentine belt and pulleys. Do whatever you can to keep that to a minimum. Good Luck!

The Tacoma V6 is one of the easiest oil changes.
A 15 minute job.

 

I pick up my first Tacoma actually my first Toyota tomorrow so I am interested in this as well. How many grease fittings are there to take care of at the same time as changing the oil?

 

The thisng to do is have someone who has done this before help you the first time. Hands on is the best way to learn.

 

BTW, don't get obsessed over the "washer" thing. It is hardly necessary to change the drain plug washer everytime you do an oil change. I've been doing oil changes on all of my vehicles for over 20 years and only changed washers about twice. I've never had a leaky drain plug seal.

 

That's interesting. The second one I ever changed was on my 06 Camry, at about 70K. I only did so cause it was distorted. The other was on my 99 Durango, same issue. Guess I've been lucky...

 

no worries guys i did it...very easy...take off the cap, drain the oil, swap out the filter, close the oil drain hole, fill it...drive around i paid 64 dollars for everything usually the oil change costs me like 74

 

and dont use recycled engine oil

 

Like the old oil people bring back to autozone after the oil change? I bet its cheap.

FYI - I picked up a bunch of the gaskets (oil plug washer thingy) for about a buck apiece at Napa - I even had my choice of classic metal or metal with rubberized coating!

 

yeah but its terrible for your engine, my sister's Acura TSX started to run weird when she it. she got it bc it was cheap
