Did my first change yesterday too. Oil came out of the drain hole, hit the catch pan, and splattered everywhere. :crapstorm:
Then for some reason my "7qt" catch pan filled up to the top and overflowed. (manual says 6.2qts with filter?)

Thats EXACTLY what I do. I have a local independant Toyota shop do all the oil changes on my three Toyotas. For the price of the average oil change its worth it to me not to have to buy the materials, climb under the truck, deal with removing poorly designed oem filter, drain oil without making a mess, replace new filter, fill oil, clean up, fill old milk jug with old oil and take out to the curb on trash day. Not to mention by the time I buy said materials the extra $20 to have someone else do it is money well spent and time better spent doing other things. But maybe that's just me IDK

Use to be a place like that near me until they were sued by a customer that blew an engine. The customer had the oil analyzed and found it to be sub-par re-claimed oil the shop was using. She got a new engine out of the suit, and the shop went out of business.

Exactly. Stop complaining and go find a local trusted shop that can do it. Sometimes saving a buck isn't worth the hassle

We have NAPA shop here with certified toyota mechanics...i bring the wife's prius to them whenever it needs an oil change. Their just as good as the toyota dealer at nearly less than 1/2 the price. I'll be taking my truck there also.

It’s a nice idea, but at $200 that’s a hard pass from me. I don’t like that Toyota went to the cartridge style filters, especially since they made oil changes so nice an easy with the older 4.0s that had a spin on filter right on top of the motor (I could change the oil in my ‘06 Tundra in under 15 min, including clean up and putting the tools away). But after you change one or two of these cartridge filters, it’s not too bad. I personally think Toyota made oil changes unnecessarily inconvenient on their newer vehicles so more people would pay their service techs to do them.

Yes. Think rinsed peanut butter jar in cold water. If you use hot later you get more out.

Oh shoot, I had no idea our trucks substituted oil for water. Dang, that's some thin oil. At least you don't need to warm the engine up to drain it.

Oil turns black after 1k miles or less, it's normal. This does not mean the engine or oil is dirty.

Oil changes are like hand jobs. Sure you can do it yourself but why when you can pay someone else to do it. And THAT'S money well spent
    Hell yeah!

You are looking at a very thin layer of oil up against a bright dipstick. Pull the drain plug and it'll probably be black. Nothing wrong with that. Means its working.

So true. It isn't easy for anyone laying on the ground or creeper. I think I cut out and hinged a door on my 16's skid plate.
After watching some techs put on a drain plug with an impact without prestarting it or leaving off oil filters I still do mine when it's warm. At 64+ I'm not laying on the ground in the middle of winter.

I changed my own oil in my 99 F-150 but haven't since in 20 years up until the other day, and that was the first time dealing with the cartridge filter. I can see why they went to the cartridge. Less waste, and perhaps more importantly, a more rugged/reliable seal/mechanism. That son of a gun is IN THERE. A spin on relies in squishing the gasket against the motor--would seem more prone to leaking/failure to me. I'm not an auto engineer.

It took me a little while (maybe an hour?) because it was my first time--my tool game was weak. Next time I'll go under it the first time with everything I need. Also removed the spoiler and left it off.

I had the Motiv-X kit and didn't really make much of a mess at all.

I've seen several posts here on Tacoma World regarding Baxter. You might try the forums search function.

    Here is one Baxter thread:

I don’t want to sound like a dick here but why so many folks are having a hard time changing the oil on the 3rd gen? It takes like 30 mins, it’s just a few more steps than the regular spin on filter. I’ve changed my oil 4 times now and it’s super easy. Taking the skid plate off takes as long as the actual oil change.

I can't believe all the complaints on oil changes.

Buy the proper tool for the filter housing, extension and socket. NOT HARD. Toyota has been using that design for probably pushing 10 yrs now on different vehicles. Probably shouldn't be wrenching yourself on your truck if that oil filter housing is too much for you.
