I've never heard of those kinds of wood. Do they have nice grain? :p

Most other brands are better than Traeger pellets. You can use any food grade pellets and they’ll work just fine. I use Cabela’s brand but most others will tell you that Lumberjack is they way to go; I just can’t get them here.

I can't tell any difference of the taste of the food cooked. I use Lumberjack, because it is sold locally by a neighbor. I just go get a bag whenever I want, shop door is never locked, pay him when I see him. Kinda handy. :)

Traeger will tell you not to use any other brands because they're greedy MFers and want to sell you on their brand.. but if you do a little research their pellets are "flavored" with oils and that's just not cool with me. Plus.. they're freaking expensive!

I personally run the Pit Boss brand pellets.. the Competition Blend to be more specific. I get them in a 40 pound bag for $15 at Wal Mart.. Lumber Jack and Traeger and most other brands ar right at $20 for a 20 pound bag.. so that's a hard no for me.

They work for kitty litter and oil cleanup too lol

Residential heating pellet stoves are great if u don’t mind weekly cleaning and have a generator for when a winter storm knocks out the power

When I bought the smoker, they had the 33 pound bags at $18 so I grabbed 3. I looked at the Pit Boss pellets at Walmart yesterday and that's what got me thinking about jumping ship.

Thanks for the input, everyone!

I prefer a normal wood stove as a backup heat source in case of power outages or just supplemental fun (my workout in the summer is splitting and stacking wood and then my winter is just burning it and getting free heat. I don’t have a wood stove though just an open fireplace). Doesn’t need electricity to run. My neighbors had that growing up - wood stove and a secondary heat source. I have natural gas lines piped in for forced hot water radiators. Doesn’t get much more efficient than that. In theory a dinky little generator could run my heat - it’s just a pump basically, the heat source is piped in and if that natural gas stops flowing we got bigger issues. But I’m looking to see if I can find a Craigslist special wood stove I can install in my fireplace this summer and just have that as a secondary heat source in case of a power outage. A lot of the heat would still go up and out but it wouldn’t be a primary source, just more efficient burning of my free firewood :notsure:

I’ve accidentally committed to at least two butts this week. Will probably do Thursday night, smoke into the stall and then overnight in the oven. Shred before work Friday. Or Friday night into Saturday same deal.

Today for lunch I made a lovely mincemeat and pasta dish served in a rich tomato sauce flavored with On Point. Will definitely do this again!

I bought an insert from Costco. Came with everything: stove, pipe, cap, fan and all associated hardware. It was fairly priced IMO and simple looking which I like.

    image.jpg
I’ve burned maybe close to 4 cords of oak through it and it has done great.

I also get free firewood if I’m willing to cut and split it, from my folks.

We have LP here for heat and it follows gas prices fairly close... burning wood goes a lot further!

    Also there’s a thread for this: https://www.tacomaworld.com/threads/wood-heat-thread-post-pics.237436/page-191
