Sounds like you need a 4th gen 4 runner with the v6. It’s got awd capabilities.
And the case mates up to the 2nd gen Tacoma auto tranny.

I’m surprised @BillsSR5 hasn't stopped by to tell you his opinion of how stupid this idea is. To paraphrase, “Just trade it in and get a 4Runner”!

Hello, very glad to have found this thread.

I'm looking into making my 2006 tundra full time 4wd with either the VF4AM or HF2A tcase.

Jowett - you mentioned earlier in the thread having had a tundra with the HF2A tcase from a land cruiser, is this correct? If so how hard was the swap? Any info would be much appreciated!

I think the VF4AM would be the better option for me and seems doable being that it is in the same year sequoia with the same transmission but can't find much info after hours of searching...same with the HF2A.

Will continue to follow this thread - sounds like a good project!

You only need to be looking at the VF Series cases. The HF cases are from Land Cruisers that have both differentials offset to the right side of the vehicle, so no go for a Tundra. My Tundra swap was in a second gen Tundra that utilizes the JF Series transfer cases. The VF4AM should bolt in, but you'll need to check how the Sequoia actuates things and compare to the Tundra.

Thank you...that makes sense. Was about to crawl under my dads LC to take a look at that hf case but this saves me the time. From the FSM for the sequoia and tundra...the cases look identical. Best visual i can find lol.

I am now realizing I've yet to come across what tcase is actually in my tundra. I would have thought the VF4BM - from the V8 4runner and the gx470 - however those cases are no 2wd, full time 4wd with a center diff lock. What case does the tundra have...?

And yes, electrical is what i am diving into now. Still have yet to find a EWD for the 05+ sequoia or 4runner, but am deciphering the 06 tundra EWD to determine whats already there.

Apologies for taking the thread on a tangent, any help is appreciated.

Is this project complete? I am considering buying a 2016+ Tacoma with 6MT transmission but I really want that AWD goodness so I'm hoping someone's got a final list of parts/modifications required. I was reading something about using the Sequoia transfer case but that was for a Tundra and only up to the 2014 model.

    Thanks all!

Still slowly building the truck. Straight AWD shouldn't be an issue, depends on if you want to keep the dial on the dash or have a manual stick to select things.

Thanks for the quick reply! Personally I'd like to have the option of 4WD lock, AWD, and 2WD, if possible. The lo ranges would be nice, too. Ideally via the knob on the dash or some buttons.

Good luck with your continued build!

No problem. Again, the simplest way to achieve this will likely this combo... The 2WD, AWD, CDL/4x4 will be on the dial that normally controls 2WD, 4WD, 4WD Low. The H, N, L will be on a manual stick.

    I see.

Did one of your existing posts cover all the parts required? Or you're still not done so no final list yet?

For the Tundra I was reading about it was just swap transfer case, adjust length of the driveshafts, install a button, install an LED. I forget how many of the features it had, though.

Really appreciate whatever you can put together.

Yes, that's Victor, he did an excellent job taking the AWD Tundra swap to the next level by installing the 2nd gen Sequoia multimode. That is similar to what we are doing here with the Taco. He is kind enough to list me as the inspiration, as I performed the first Tundra AWD swap with a full time Land Cruiser transfer case.

One VF4AM transfer case, part number 36100-3D510, is inbound. This is the unit installed in V6 4-Runners from 2003 - 2009. Current retail through USA dealers is $3281.11, but can be purchased for substantially less.
