snow plowing

Does anyone plow with their second gen? Can you post a little info on your setup and if you are happy with it? Im looking to put a light duty four way hydraulic angle plow on mine but im not sure where to start.

There have been a handful of threads on this. Search 'plow' and about 10 threads come up. The Tacoma is a light so you wouldn't want a wide, heavy plow hanging off the front.

 

If you have a rough dirt driveway you might not want to. Most of the plows for the second gen trucks are pretty light duty. I've got an old crusty 89 toy with an ancient (probably early 80's) fisher speedcast setup on it that I plow with. Plowing can be tough on the truck and it can be a pain to take the blade on and off in the freezing cold. Not wanting to deal with the blade any longer is one of the reasons I bought my 05 tacoma and turned the 89 into a yard truck. I prefer not to worry about beating up my nice truck.

I have a nice and smooth paved drive that i do with a walkbehind snowblower right now. I only have to drive the truck to work 2 days a week so i might not remove it a lot but i see your point. I have room in my garage for the truck and plow too so thats a bonus. And i deffinately dont want to beat the truck. Thanks.

 

For the price of the plow (≈$2000) you should be able to find a used 4-wheeler with a blade to do it. I think it would be better than wearing out your truck and all the hassle.

 

Meyer makes a nice plow called the drivepro. It is the only plow that I can find that is steel and not plastic.

 

Been there. Done that. Too cold for me. I want a heater, wipers, and a radio.

I'm very happy with my setup...I only plow my driveway which is long but it is paved. The poly blade is very light but this is the only plow setup (I believe) that has hydraulic down-pressure. Light plows tend to float on top of the snow so the downpressure is important and allows me to scrape my driveway down to the pavement. Also has a very nice wireless controller.

 

Check your manual ... snowplowing voids your drivetrain warranty.

EDIT: You know I'm going to retract this as I've been pouring over my 2010 manuals and warranty guides and can't find anything at the moment. But I will keep looking as I know I have heard/seen this. In any case it would be advisable to call the dealer and ask them, especially if you are going to plow more than a personal driveway.

 

Never seen that...what section/page did you see that? Almost out of warranty anyway but interested.

 

I've got a big hydraulic Hiniker on an F250 with chains on all 4s... it's a tank and does a great job. I do some heavy duty plowing several times a winter.

That being said, personally I'd never turn my Taco into a plow-truck due to the impacts on your truck and the 1,000s of times you'll be shifting from D to R to D over and over in a short space. Plowing is tough on trucks, and although the taco would make a decent plow truck and definitely get it done, it's a fairly light truck and the wear/tear would be too much for my favorite truck.

i plow snow in the winter for a living and would never put a plow on a taco. dont do it they sell lots of old cheap plow trucks for the same price as a new blade that will work great for a driveway.

if you are looking for reliable and only do a little plowing I would get a Snowman backdrag blade. hooks into a 2" hitch. made in iowa. just google and you will find it. it will be easier on your truck and it is in the back and your truck was designed to pull something over bumps but not push something over bumps. takes the weight off you front suspension. has down pressure and hand control

i almost bought one for my taco but decided it wasnt a smart move in general to even consider using my truck to plow. but i did really want it for personal use. i just didnt have the nuts to do it.

Try the Snowbear plow. (http://www.snowbear.ca/) It's a personal snowplow, not meant for commercial use. I've had mine for 8 years, three on my 07 Tacoma. Works great, only used on my drive (300'+) and occasionally my neighbours. Very reasonable cost, light weight, goes on and off the truck in minutes, no hydraulics to contend with. As said it's not a commercial unit and lacks some of the bells and whistles (ie, it has manual angle but I usually have it set to one side and two passes do my drive in no time.) I live in Ontario where we get a reasonable amount of lake effect snow over the season. No mods are needed to the body other than the frame mounts which are out of the way and not visable when the mount bar and plow are removed.

I have a 2008 Tacoma 4 cy, 5 speed, Bought a Meyers Drive Pro, This truck has no problem at all. As long as you treat it good she';ll do the same.
I plow in 4x4 low most times, have not had a problem. I can back blade with no problems. You can not do that with these other light plows. .
As far as the Plows, Heavy snow you will want to do every 6 inchs or so
One other important thing, you will want to put weight in the back of your truck. Usally about 400 lbs. Yes it will handle the weight and last you;ll want to put a set of timbren in the front.
I looked at fisher and blizzard, Meyers Drive Pro you can not beat. It is rugged, has a 5 year warrenty and their offering a $350 rebate right now.
