Another method which would be permanent would be to pull the cubbies, mask the holes, and fill them with black abs glue. The cubbies themselves are abs so the abs cement would dry leaving no more holes and nothing to degrade and fall off/out later.

Moved mine over from my old truck. The middle piece comes out so I have the full height if needed. Also my bike fits under it if I take the front wheel and pedals off.

Still haven't built a platform. This is easy and simple. The two mattress pads button together. I fold this in half to load the truck. Camp box and cooler on one side, bedding a clothing bags on the other side.

Back in 2006 when I got my truck and put the shell on, I cut pieces of inner tube to cover the holes (on the outside of the cubbies where you can't see it) and used contact cement to hold them in place. Last time I checked they were still there.

Made it with scrap lumber the previous tenants left behind.

could moisture be a contributing factor in cold weather hardening? i've seen futon mattresses mold on the bottom because they were not on a ventilated platform.

there's quite a few people making them nowadays. i found a guy on fb marketplace that lives in san diego and makes them. mine was around $120. great deal. one of my favorite mods for sure. thinking about making some myself.

here is the thread where we've been brainstorming. let me know if you want the guy's contact info

I have a "cottage" (actually a trailer that never moves) with a memory foam mattress. It's completely dry, no moisture at all. When it's cold, the foam gets really solid. My body heat will soften it up... eventually.

That's a thread I'm definitely going to be watching. That ribbed piece of crap that's on there from the factory practically makes kneepads a required piece of equipment if you're getting in and out of a shell.

Single person tent with a double air mattress. Good to go. I sleep great on the cool Michigan summer nights.

Got that first gen right here. Did the original in OSB and framing lumber, have since rebuilt with good marine ply, routed support rails, etc. Also stitched up a low key curtain system with dowel rods and those cable hanger numbers. Cabside panels lift open for storage. Gate side panels are fixed with drawers. Whole thing is pretty light and comes apart with four Allen keyed bolts.
