Good evening. I’ve made the decision to go with the OEM LED headlights 2021 for my 17 Tacoma. I know Ive read somewhere a while back on members making the wiring harness for the headlights? Can you guys point me to the right person on purchasing the harness.

I also saw that TRS is selling the harness for $100.

Price doesn’t matter for me. I care about quality over some cheap eBay crap.

    thank you guys in advance!

I’ve been reading a bunch on this over the last 3 days. From what I can surmise, you don’t wanna buy TRS because they have faulty wiring and have made zero attempts to fix it. Other options include buying from some members listed in the LED mega thread.

That’s exactly why I created this thread. I’ve read through the pages before and some people were complaining that they ordered the harness from “certain member” and didn’t hear from that individual for a while. Not trying to go through all that.

I saw that TRS was selling them also and thanks to you I’ll stay away and not purchase their harness.

    I appreciate the heads up.

I’m no expert, I’ve just been reading A LOT on this LED thread and sub threads over the past few days and I’m not sure what I believe anymore. I got exactly the Tacoma I wanted minus the LED headlights and I’ve been looking to swap but the more I read, the more just leaving them alone or just swapping bulbs to LED with Diode Dynamics sounds like the better performance option. If you want some more quick gouge, the Alpharex lights are total shit according to the forum. They don’t come close to being a quality headlight even against the standard Tacoma OEM halogens. The Moromoto XBs are pretty good compared to the OEM LEDs but the OEMs are still top dog in performance. All in all it sounds like if ya want the looks, buy the alpharex/Morimoto. If ya want performance, leave your lights as is haha. Again, not my original thoughts, just the derivative sum of everything I’ve been reading. If ya want numbers and stats, there’s a guy that compares all the headlights down to the lumens, power, reflection/projection, and focus.

I think that certain member was the only person making them for sale. @Puppypunter is the only other member that might have something that works, that I can think of.

That’s the dude that I was trying to remember. “Puppy something” haha. He’s definitely the guy I’ve seen listed multiple times on multiple LED harness threads

Questions for OP: What trim is your truck? Do you have or plan on having grille lights?

I’m not OP but I’m curious since you’re on now. I got a ‘21 TRD Off-road with halogen headlights (LED little half DRLs) and halogen fogs. No grille lights wanted.

what do ya got for that?

I could make one, but I hate moving in on Mikes gig, even though I've heard more than once that he is hard to get any communication from. Hit up @daveeasa He has a few variations. Especially if you are interested in quality. Dave's stuff is top notch.

I have no love for the TRS harness but I’m not sure I can go all the way to call it faulty. I think it is a poor design and not properly labeled and in addition requires a perfect installation or you blow some fuses. It’s definitely not forgiving. I would avoid it for sure but I am not sure it’s fair to go all the way to “faulty”. The level of effort to de-pin and swap the low beam connectors if you know what you are doing is not a big deal. Tieing the grounds together is stupid but not inherently wrong. It’s a cluster but it does work if you know exactly what you are doing.

My DIY thread has the options. I consider the eBay auction linked in the DIY thread to be tremendous value-wise. It takes me a fair bit of time to build these so $50 for a pair would be well below minimum wage. I haven’t bought one from that auction specifically but from the photos it looks quite nice.

Mike’s harness includes sidemarker caps. Or you can get those from me if your harness doesn’t have them, for $10 shipped. They just seal the unused connectors for the sidemarker lights. Tape could work too but I like the caps as they click in like legit connectors.

The option I sell includes a grille light tap so you can look like a Ford. R4T sells this grille light DRL harness for $49. I priced my harness where I did since it’s sort of an integration of the two harnesses plus a few extra things like butt connectors, fender flare clips and a piece of heat shrink. I’m trying to provide an all-in-one option or one-stop-shopping experience. For people who have less time to spend reading up on details and just want maximum support from someone more familiar with it.

Regardless of harness selection, I’m always game to help out with advice for the install. I’m a big fan of these headlights.

Also, Philips H9’s in low beams are the best value (I sell H9 connectors to avoid a need for bulb base mod) and OEM LED is the top pick for LED assemblies. Morimoto XB v2 outperforms OEM LED but the model crash tested had some build oddities which makes it a little questionable. I’d read the v2 review before seriously considering those.

LED bulbs in a halogen projector make me cranky but if someone simply must go that way, the morimoto 2stroke bulbs are best but cost almost $200. Hikari are the best “value” but may have trouble in cold weather and may not last multiple years.

Last, halogens melt snow while LED headlights and bulbs do not. My “solution” to that concern was to get DD SS3 MAX fog lights which do melt snow. I figure if I’m forced to drive in a freak blizzard I will be doing so at very slow speed. High performance snow melting would be a bigger concern in Canada or Alaska and for those regions the H9 option may simply be the best overall solution.

I have LEDs on both my Wrangler and my DCLB OR (was lucky there in finding it with LEDs). The Wrangler is the worse in the snow due to the recess of the headlights and the buildup of snow. I ended up adding Hella Halogen lights to the bumper for when it snows. The Tacoma was pretty good this year in the snow. Not having the recess helps.

thanks. I’m just looking for the harness. I’m purchasing the non TRD PRO headlight. Sounds like other members are making them also…
