Welcome Victoria to TW, I think you will find the Toyota a more solid truck than you JK Jeep... Just do the recommended services, and personally I like to change the oil closer to 3,000 miles than the recommended 5,000.

I used to own a Jeep it was new and plagued with factory defects and poor quality materials and workmanship... I loved it and that was sad. I still like Jeeps as a vehicle, but I don't think I would ever own one again.

I am on my third Tacoma ('01 and '05 before my '10) and the first two had over 100,000 miles put on them in less than 5 years... They are so good, I see no reason to change. I take them off road into Baja California, Mexico and the Borrego desert east of my home in San Diego County.

The Tacoma is one tough beast... won't break down... and provides you with security in knowing it can go anywhere you want... at least mine does!

Anyway, good luck and happy wheeling in New Mexico!

I live in Santa Teresa...right down Country Club...so it's easier to say El Paso. Plus I work in El Paso. So just a few of us in this forum? I see tons of Tacomas around here!

I have read several posts on here that talk about people having the TRD 4x2 and they off road and drive on sand and they say they just use the rear diff lock?? What does that mean?
Sorry to sound ignorant but this is my first Toyota and although I researched the Tacoma before I purchased...there are just so many freakin' options and builds!!!!!

Diff lock means both tires turn @ the same time.

Okay...so is that something that you turn on? I have some switch on the right hand side on my dash and it is for traction or something and I read the manual but it just didn't make sense to me.

Oops...it's on the left hand side.

I believe the TRD Sport only comes with the Limited Slip differential. Only the TRD Off-Road has locking rear differential. I have heard the newer Tacomas have some new fangled 4 wheel drive set up, but my old 2006 Sport came with Limited Slip. (while in 2wd one wheel will drive the truck, but if that wheel slips, the other side will kick in as a drive wheel. (Something along those lines.)
