It's a 2006 Tacoma DC V6 TRD Sport manual. It has 33,000kms. I'm trading in my 2005 F-150 for it. Dealer is offering me $11,000-12,000 for the trade in. He's quoting me $26,500 before the trade-in.

The MSRP is 26,900. What would be a good price to start negotiations?

Any tips would be great [IMG]. Thank you,
    Leo

That price for the Tacoma you are being quoted is about the price for a brand new truck, let alone one that is 5 years old. (good mileage on it though) Do some checking as to what a 2006 truck is worth from the www.toyota.ca site where it provides a link to 'value your trade in'. For now, concentrate on price of truck, THEN get a trade in value on your F150.

Go through this link, will give you an idea what others paid.
    http://www.tacomaworld.com/forum/2nd-gen-tacomas/10864-how-much-did-you-pay-your-taco.html

FWIW - I got my '06 TRD Sport v6 auto LB with 43,000 km in sept for 23,100 all tax & add ons in. That included a 3 yr/100,000 km warranty. It wasn't perfect cosmetically but overall condition was good.

I would lowball the guy. When he says what you're offering is out to lunch, tell him what he's asking is too.

That price isnt even close to the price of a brand new Tacoma in Canada.

    /\/\ So true it's sad....

I checked Alberta for dealers and they seem to be in mid 20's for roughly that truck. The km's are really low so probably why they're on the high side of the scale. I don't know what the market is like there but it wouldn't seem to far out of place. Best I could find here is $22k but that had 120K km's on it.

Having said that, I never pay full price for anything so if it's what you want then start dickering and see where you get. If you're happy with it go for it. You wont' find those type of km's on that year often.

This truck brand new in Canada is probably $37,000... Canada eh.

I'm thinking of offering him $25,000 OTD which would be quite the lowball offer here. Most dealers won't sell under MSRP for new vehicles and I don't know how much wiggle-room they have on the used cars. If I could actually sell my truck privately here, I'd be looking at importing from the USA. Alas, there's been no interest on my F-150.

26k for a 2006 with 33km.... I think you can do a bit better. I spent the better part of 6 months looking for a truck before I bought my new one. The double cabs do run higher than a/c but imo 26 is still too high.

remember when negotiating there are a coupld good tools you can bring (especially being as your in vic) Do a search on autotrader.ca for used tacomas and get some documentation on prices etc. Also toyota.ca has a section for certified used vehicles. Sometimes a better financing rate and a bit of warranty ( i think 06 would be the oldest you could get). Also look at some newer vehicles... even if the price is a little higher, the dealers are usually responsive to you making comments about this vehicle not having any warranty etc..

Lastly, used vehicles are where the dealers really make there money, so they likely do have some room. If that vehicle was traded in they likely gave the guy 20k.. so 22k would be a reasonable price. If it was a lease who knows. its always tough to know, but start low.

Heres a link to a quick search on the toyota website... 2006 - 2008 tacomas.

    http://www.toyota.ca/cgi-bin/WebObjects/WWW.woa/24/wo/gSacL6WnybLvBO7kk5npBg/5.17

Good luck, finding the right one is half the fun.

Do you owe on your truck. I re-read and if your getting 11,00 for your truck.. I would say purchase price of 22,000 less 11,000 is 11,000 before tax. Add hst = $12,320. So say 12,500 after they try and add some bs dealer fees, maybe get them to add some nice rubber for your or whatever you like...

Ya, I own the truck. If I could get the truck for anywhere near $22,000 I'd jump all over it, but I don't know if they're willing to budge. I'll offer them that though and see where to take it from there.

I like the fact that if I trade my truck in, I'll take a huge break in HST. This almost makes up for what I'd get for selling it privately.

As a comparison, I paid $29K for an 09 with 29,000km in early 2010. TRD OR Access Cab. I looked for a long time and this was what I considered a very good deal.

If i were you I would shop around in the States. The dollar is at par now, same as when i bought my truck in 2008. Including inspections and taxes I paid just under 30K for a new truck.

Hmm, with this as comparison, I think if I can get it down to $23,000-24,000 then I'd be getting a good (Canadian) deal. I really want to buy used in the US, but I'd have to sell my F-150 privately first and I've been trying to do that for a few months, but no takers.

Yeah, now that there is hst on used vehicles it makes it tougher to sell privately. More people buying used at a dealer in the belief that they are more 'honest' than a private seller.

    Good luck with the purchase!

It's funny how much of a price diff there is between the States and Canada. I have that exact truck and bought it used a year and a half ago for $23,500 private with extended warranty, and the dealers were selling them for anywhere between $26,000-29,000. My truck came with the original window sticker from when it was new...$41,398! It's crazy...

OP , I don't know whether you are getting a good deal or not , but I would not say that price is too far off , especially when you consider that the truck only has 33,000 km's on it . My '09 has 40,000 .

Hmm well I got approved for financing at the dealership. I'll see if I can get the deal for $26,000 OTD. I think I'd be happy with that deal, but I don't think they'll do it.

I'm also checking if I can get a loan or LOC from my bank. If I can, I'm going down to the US and importing a used Tacoma over and I'll sell my F-150 privately.
